I have about 500 miles on my Limited and when I really gun it I smell this burning coming from the engine. I have only nailed it like 4 times for a few seconds since I had it and get this smell every time. Is this normal for break in or do I have a problem?

It takes awhile to burn off all the gunk and labels from production. Gunning the engine heats up the exhaust much much more than usual, especially the cats. So you will be burning off more gunk and more downhill.

You may want to check for oil leaks that are dripping on a hot surface.

not exaclty... It says in the manual something along the lines of varying throttle within local speed laws. It's much better to vary rpm's during break in and not keep at the same RPM for an extended length of time. Most people think being gentle means keeping the same low RPM's and it's just not the case. You just don't want to be going into high RPM range and obviously going WOT isn't recommended either. Most motorcycles are more specific and say to vary rpm's between X and X for the first 600 miles.

I think the break in is just to cover their butts. At my job we get new vehicles every few years and pick them up out of state. From the day we get them we go well over the speed limit, haul heavy materials, and basically treat them like crap because we don't own them. In my 20 years we have never had an engine go out or give us trouble. Transmissions, transfer cases, etc. is a different story.

sorry, I had you mixed up with the dude that said he rips the crap out of company vehicles.... it reminded me of a co-worker who occassionally liked to drive rental cars in through the exit spikes when he was on company business..

I had that burning smell for a few days too, it went away though. I have about 1600 miles on mine now and I've already done an oil change to Synthetic.

Might want to check your shocks. I had the burning smell and thought it was engine break in. After 1500 miles I was underneath checking things out and saw both front shocks leaking. The oil was coming off and hitting hot stuff causing the smell. Had both shocks replaced at dealership and no more smell. Just an idea.

IMO more important than driving it like a baby is to do an oil change after the first 1000 miles. The initial run gets so much crap into the oil, I'm surprised this is not the recommendation. Also, for all the engines we build there's no babying it. We heat cycle it a few times and then some wot. We've pulled them apart after 100k miles and they are impeccably clean and are in much better condition then most if not all engines that went through the babying procedure.
