Exclamation Buzzing noise from middle of windshield/dashboard

I have a 2011 GC Overland (V8 5,7L). I have an intermittent buzzing noise (starts off like a fly buzzing then gets louder like a beehive). Noise goes away after 1-2 min of driving. It's hard to replicate for the dealer. It buzzes mainly when I do a quick acceleration (like merging onto the freeway) and the buzzing comes on between 45-65 mph. Then it goes away and usually won't repeat until I turn the car off and drive it again later. Any ideas? I'm thinking it's a wind gap between the windshield and dash (rubber seal may have a leak?) but I'm not sure. Any ideas??

This is an interesting one, but i have found that many of my rattles have been objects stored within my car. For the longest time I had this annoying rattle that I believed was inside my dash. It was driving me insane. One day I put on my sunglasses on that I had in my overhead console, and the rattle disappeared. Another rattle that happened during acceleration turned out to be the maglight that I kept by my spare.

Is the sound distinct enough to record it?

I get a similar noise when I start my '11 Laredo X (3.6) in the morning. It seems to be only when the weather is cold. But after a minute or 2 it never does it again.

Re: Buzzing noise from middle of windshield/dashboard

It does occur mostly when it's cold. It's not a rattle of things in my glovebox or sunglasses holder as it happened when I drove home from the dealer...bought it far from home so I couldn't turn around and take it to the dealer...and there was only a manual in the glovebox. Yes it goes away after about 1-2 minutes. It's just annoying and hoping to figure it out since dealerships usually try to oversell stuff we they "think" will fix it.

Now that I read your post in more details I get exactly the same thing - it gets louder when I accelerate even from the stop to 25-30 mph.

I don't intend to do anything about it even though I have extended warranty on my Jeep. Don't want dashboard all taken apart for this reason.

Re: Buzzing noise from middle of windshield/dashboard

Yes! I do too. It gets louder when I accelerate. I thought it only happened when I did a fast acceleration (like merging on the freeway or starting at a green light) but it does happen sometimes at slower starting speeds. Just annoying and surprises my passengers when I drive. I'm hoping it's just a cold weather thing as I just got it in Nov. Hopefully when the weather is warmer it won't do it.

This is my 4th Jeep (1998 GC Laredo, 1999 Cherokee, 1999 GC Laredo, and 2011 GC Overland) and this noise is a first. My other Jeeps lasted forever and never had a windshield noise like this. Plus they never had issues. I lucked out with my Jeeps. I love Jeeps as they tend to last forever.

Re: Buzzing noise from middle of windshield/dashboard

This is going to sound sort of weird. I had just installed a Lockpick Air V2 in my Jeep yesterday, and when I pulled out the factory UCONNECT® 8.4A/RA3 head unit from the dash, it was making this "leaking air" "Buzzing" noise from the radio. I had thought for sure that the radio was going into some sort of erase everything self destruct mode and soon smoke was going to be coming from it.

After I put it all back and started to button it all up, the radio began making that buzzing/ air leaking noise again. Anyhow, not sure if this is a possibility or your noise or not. Below is link for the Lockpick I installed if anyone interested.

Also weird but the same thing happened to me after a windshield replacement. I found out it was the plastic piece on the back side of the rear view mirror vibrating against the glass. Putting my hand on the plastic while driving stopped the noise, so I did what any red neck engineer would do... Duck taped it. Haven't heard the noise since.

Re: Buzzing noise from middle of windshield/dashboard

My wife GC started making a buzzing noise at highway speeds the other day. I noticed that when i turned the windshield wipers on, the buzzing went away while the wiper was in motion. Very strange. thought???

Re: Buzzing noise from middle of windshield/dashboard

My wife has a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and we get the buzzing noise only on the highway for a few minutes. I have been trying to figure this out for a while and just recently discovered this forum. I turned on the windshield wipers and the sound went away the first time and I thought i figured it out, but then the sound happened again and the wiper trick did not work. Has anyone else messed with the rear view mirror? Going to check that out this week sometime.

Re: Buzzing noise from middle of windshield/dashboard

My dealership's discovery is that the strip around the very bottom of the windshield is plastic and is warping. I bought my Jeep used and I'm sure the owner left the car in the hot sun since that strip and my dashboard top is starting to lift. The curls in the plastic outer window guard are catching wind at certain speeds. When it's cold, the strip is harder and makes the buzzing more frequently and only lasts for about 15-45 sec. Sometimes longer if I'm constantly accelerating (like merging onto the freeway). But it does go away. I haven't had time to get a quote on fixing that, as my extended warranty doesn't cover that. Hope that helps.

Re: Buzzing noise from middle of windshield/dashboard

I have a 2012 and about a year ago I was getting a buzzing/rattling from that area too. Drove me nuts for a week or so until I finally decided to push up on the plastic housing behind the rearview mirror. Doing that stopped the noise and I have not heard it since.
