Check Engine Light

Start up my car last night and noticed that my check engine light was on. Weird, so I turned the car off and back on again. Still there.

I checked the vehicle diagnostics on the dash, no issues showing and still 60% oil life. Ran the diagnostics through the Uconnect system, it told me that if the light was on I need to take it in to the dealership immediately to "avoid catastrophic damage to the engine"

3600 miles, 4 months old, 2015 Overland. Jeep reliability wastes no time in shining through.

Re: Check Engine Light

I'd wager that the light will go off after the third start/shutdown of the engine.

If it's not throwing a code there's not much your dealer can do about it other to make note of it in your service records.

Re: Check Engine Light

The last time my Jeep (2014 at the time) had the check engine light come on, my vehicle stalled as I was accelerating onto the highway. RPM's would shoot up but I couldnt get the vehicle above 20mph. Had to get the vehicle towed. Turns out some dipshit at the jeep dealership put on 2 O rings on the oil filter when I went in for a change. Leaked oil all over the engine and basically the jeep went into self preservation mode.

Point being, it didnt throw code at me that time. The light just came on and then it all went to shit. So really Im not too sure what it could be

Re: Check Engine Light

Yeah, I don't blame you for wondering what's causing the MIL after going through that.

Re: Check Engine Light

Every Jeep owner should own a obdii reader. I have 3 elm327 readers and use the free torque app.

Could just be a gascap...

Re: Check Engine Light

The dash won't tell you a lot of things. Either a scanner or better yet WiTech will. Could be thousands of things. The fuel filler flap could be one. Loose dipstick. Erroneous reading from an O2 sensor.
I giggle at the "catastrophic" engine damage in the OM. Most often it's just a minor little thing that brings on the light. Trust me, we own a VW as well.

Re: Check Engine Light

ODB 2 scan tools are a good thing to have if you are getting lights popping on they at least give you an idea about what is going on with any stored codes. They have gotten so cheap now a days also, the one at the link below is one I just bought on amazon for $24. I also have one of the older(expensive) ones that just gives the number readouts but these newer Bluetooth ones sync with your phone and give you lots more info. The one I got also runs the torque app. it will even give you 0-60 times and things like that.
