Check engine light on - any way to get the code?

Hi,
I was on the freeway and my check engine light came on. On my old Jeep I was able to just open the driver door and turn the key 3 times to aux and the code would pop on. Is there a way to do that in the 2012 Grand Cherokee?
Thanks!

Nope, unfortunately. Most auto parts stores have code readers they will let you use though.

Thank you. I'll just bring it to the dealer when I get a chance.

FYI.
I think a flashing check engine light indicates a more serious problem than a steady light.

Had an appointment with the dealer today but happily the light went out last night. Must have been a loose gas cap. Strange since it seemed snug.

There is probably still a code stored in the system, which will give you a clue as to what it was.

These days, OBDII CAN code readers are not expensive (under $100). So instead of seeing the light and wondering what it could be, you could invest in a reader and know.

OBD-II software and a bluetooth dongle are under $50 for Android or Windows.
See here.
