Eddie, my Jeep does the exact same thing as yours. Is it only the 3.6 litres making this noise?

Re: Cold weather starting noise

I received a call from my dealership yesterday saying that Jeep issued a service bulletin saying they are aware of this issue and are looking for a cause. They said the suspected parts should not negatively affect longevity of the engine. They also said that once Jeep finds/fixes the issue a full service bulletin will be issued so that anyone experiencing this noise can get it fixed free of charge.

Edit: Just called the dealer back. The service bulletin says "belt tensioner and/or idler pulley bearing"

Also, here's mine. Same whine noise.

Re: Cold weather starting noise

Thanks for posting the information. My 2012 is also making a high pitched whine for a breif moment when I start it in cold weather. Only have about 1,500 miles left on my warranty so hopefully I can get it covered before I go over on mileage.

Bake - did your dealer provide any information on a service bulletin number for the belt/tensioner replacement?

No unfortunately. The bulletin was never officially announced. This was a letter to the dealer saying Jeep was aware of the issue and would release an official bulletin when a fix was found for the issue.

Re: Cold weather starting noise

That's my blue jeep grand cherokee in the video, and I'm still in limbo here. First trip to Jeep they said it was the water pump. Then i mentioned the serpentine belt and pulley comments here so they replaced that. Noise is still exactly the same. Running out of cold days to take back to jeep. The irony is that the Chrysler 200 loaner car they gave me made the exact same noise!. Email to jeep offered no help. They just referred me back to dealer.

I had mine into the dealer this week for an overnight vist as it was -22C.
They encountered the same noise and are aware of many other customers complaining about the same.
I was presented with a STAR Bulletin from Chrysler as described above, and also said the Dealers are not to attempt any fixes until engineers come up with a solution.

Looking at the types of fixes, it seems different parts are being used at high warranty cost . I bet they will wait until warmer weather arrives, and we will all be fixed!

Re: Cold weather starting noise

My 2011 does the same thing when it's cold out! I'm glad I found this thread. Will keep an eye on it and hopefully have a service bulletin I can print out and bring to the dealer.

Re: Cold weather starting noise

I've had a noise like this in MN cold weather since my '93 Audi.
The Audi was cam seals.
They 'whistle/vibrate' from blow-by gases pushing out past them when cold (stiff rubber/vinyl).

I just assumed the same thing on any car I've owned since:
2006 Ford Five Hundred
2010 Subaru Legacy 3.6R
And now the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee

All of them had/have V6 engines with overhead cams (well, the Subaru is technically an H6).

I'm going to follow this thread to see if Chrysler/Jeep comes out with a fix, it would be nice to NOT hear that squeal upon startup.
