Coolant Smell After Driving

Hi,

(2014 Grand Cherokee Limited with the 3.6L and 45K miles)

After driving sometimes (not all!), there is a prevalent coolant smell coming from the front area of the Jeep. I notice it more toward the passenger side front; but sometimes I smell it on the driver's side, too. I have looked around the engine bay and coolant hoses, but I can't find any noticeable leaks. The level in the reservoir is right at the "MIN" mark, and it hasn't moved in a few weeks. The lid is on tight, and the radiator hose cap (the silver one to the right of the reservoir) is also on tight. The temperature gauge stays within normal operating parameters. There is no coolant smell in the cabin. No abnormal puddles under the car. The only things I can think of are: the radiator is leaking and I don't see it; or, the reservoir vent hose is just letting some smells out.

I did a little digging, but I was only able to turn up information pertaining to the Wrangler and Cherokee. I just wanted to double check here to see if what I found also applies.

Any insight is always appreciated!
Thanks!

I have also noticed the same smell from my JEEP, exactly as you describe it.
I too have a 2014 GC Limited 3.6L .
Like you, I have not seen any evidence of a coolant leak under the hood.

Coolant Smell After Driving

Not to scare you but be on the lookout for white smoke from the hood on non-cold mornings. It took a couple of years after I noticed but my radiator eventually sprung a leak and had to be replaced. I started smelling coolant and noticed drips on my garage floor. Looked closer and saw coolant shallow pooling in the engine bay. Caught in time before it failed. I replaced it at around 37k miles.

Hi HerrGruyere,

There are some steps the technicians at your dealership can go through to try and address the smell. What I've found on my end deals more with what is considered a "rotting smell", not just coolant, but I thought maybe it would help anyway. The techs can look up STAR case S1407000008 on their end to see if it might help.

Re: Coolant Smell After Driving

Had my JGC in for service today. Mentioned to service writer that my coolant reservoir was constantly pegged at MIN. They found a leak in the radiator. Will replace under MaxCare service contract, $100 deductible. Would have been over $800. That MaxCare contract is about half paid for now.

Maxcare has been a mandatory purchase for all 7 of my Jeeps since 2002. Well worth it, given the cost of even relatively minor repairs.
