Cow Manure Smell, Hissing/Gurgling AC

Has anyone else had this problem?

My 2014 Grand Cherokee Overland V8 AWD smells like manure inside when started and driving, and the AC hisses and gurgles. I drove it home from working Friday with the windows open and the AC off. The smell was still present today when I started it with the AC off. I looked under the hood and under the vehicle and see no problems. I plan to take it to a dealer Tuesday. It has over 50,000 miles on it, but I purchased the lifetime warranty.

Re: Cow Manure Smell, Hissing/Gurgling AC

Believe it or not, I did have this "problem" once. At the car wash they asked me what flavor scent I wanted. One choice was Leather. That sounded manly so that's what I got. Later, my wife asked me why my car interior smelled like manure. I kind of thought that was what it smelled like on the way home, but convinced myself otherwise. The car wash no longer offers Leather scent.

Tried changing the cabin air filter? That may help the smell.
You may have an A/C leak, which could explain the noises you're hearing.

Re: Cow Manure Smell, Hissing/Gurgling AC

I have had older/used cars with bad AC smells. I would take it to the dealer for sure if under warranty, but there is also an aerosol spray called OZIUM if I recall correctly. You can get it at most car parts stores. It is a small can, like a can of mace....you spray it into the air intake area for the HVAC under the hood with the HVAC running. It kills the mold and mildew causing the odor. It works great. But yes, change the HVAC filter too and let the dealer make sure you don't have a plugged up condensation drain. That might be water sloshing around in there you hear. But you may need the Ozuim too after the dealer gets done to kill the smell.

The smell is present with the AC off. It is not a mold smell.

The vehicle does not have a cabin air filter.

Re: Cow Manure Smell, Hissing/Gurgling AC

try the charcoal version of the cabin filter may help a little. Also those two small drain ports in the lower left and lower right just below the windshield dump water just below the brake booster and roughly same place on the passenger side. any crap that falls through those holes falls down and just lays there and rots so you may have some rotting build up there. mine was just chalked full of pine needles, berries, locust-cicada looking creatures and all kinds of stuff before I got a hose and blasted it out of there. that water/crap flow should be vented onto the ground not directed to lay and rot on shelf's of the body like it does.

cabin filter can be accessed behind the glove box shelf. the charcoal filter part number is 68260792AA I have been using that one vs the regular non charcoal. price is not much more

Re: Cow Manure Smell, Hissing/Gurgling AC

It does have a cabin filter as silvermax says. Not trying to argue with you! Just trying to help out. As far as the smell being more noticeable when the AC is off, I have a couple of thoughts from personal experience. My used cars I used the Ozium on had that factor as well; seems like the smell built up with the car parked and then when the AC ran it dissipated somewhat. But then leave the car off and parked and the smell came back. The Ozium took care of it. Second thought: if it smells with the AC off, have you searched every nook and cranny of the car, under the seats, under the rear cargo floor, etc. for old fruit, food, protein drink (they are the worst), etc.? We keep our cars quite clean but it's easy for something to roll into a hidden spot and be forgotten. The last time I had a funky odor in my teenager's car it was an old apple up under a seat.

Re: Cow Manure Smell, Hissing/Gurgling AC

One other thought/reason for a dealer to check it out: I had a mouse get into my blower housing on a brand new 1999 Accord. Horrendous smell as you might imagine. No one could determine any way it made it in there, but it did.

Re: Cow Manure Smell, Hissing/Gurgling AC

Thanks for the tip on the activated charcoal cabin air filter. We're in southern California, so it will be appreciated.

Interesting! The lousy owner's manual book does not mention a cabinet air filter. I removed everything from the car except the registration and insurance card to get ready to take it to the dealer. There is nothing under any seat or elsewhere.

We once left a fresh chicken from the supermarket in the trunk of our 1994 Thunderbird. That certainly smelled bad!

Off to the dealership it goes.

Re: Cow Manure Smell, Hissing/Gurgling AC

The dealership found both the AC evaporator and the heating coil leaking, so is replacing both.

I recently noticed the engine coolant reservoir low, so bought the correct coolant at a dealership and added some. I remember wondering why it was low, thinking it may have just been evaporation after 50,000 miles and over two years.

By the way, the cabin air filter it had was the activated charcoal type.

So, the ignition switch fell into the dash, and now the heater coal and evaporator. I'm glad I bought the lifetime warranty, but this is not a good start. I've got better things to do with my time than take the vehicle to the dealership, wait, fool with rentals, and so forth.

I was in a hurry, so took the Cherokee the Enterprise rental lot had, rather than wait for a Grand Cherokee or Durango from another lot. It is junk by comparison - a lousy, uncomfortable seat, a moaning four cylinder engine, front wheel drive, and the worst fake wood I've ever seen - yuck!

So you've had 2 problems in 50k miles? Doesn't sound like a bad start at all to me. My Lexus has had more problems in the first 10k miles.......
