Re: Cracked Windshield

I had Safelite replace my 5 day old JGC windshield in June. Beautiful neat job done on my blackberry beauty!

Re: Cracked Windshield (Repeat)

Second cracked windshield. First at 841 miles, now at about 7500 miles.
Am I doing something wrong (I don't offroad and fairly minimal freeway driving)? Geez.....

Two cracked windshields
Rear passenger door replaced (car backed into it while parked)
Nail in my tire
Skunk spray
Locked my keys in the car today (yes, you can do that with the key fob in site and no warning). I know - still stupid.

Still love the car but getting a little spooked.

Re: Cracked Windshield

It's all due to the skunk spray.

Re: Cracked Windshield

Our first real issue (except sat presets disappearing) after nearly 11,000 miles!

We went to our Overland this morning, and overnight while unmolested in the garage the windshield got an 18" crack from the right center towards the middle. You can feel the crack on the outside of the glass, but not the inside.

Nary a chip of any sort even near to there, this just materialized overnight while sitting still.

This would seem to be a factory defect, as there is zero sign of damage. Anybody else encounter this, and if so did Jeep replace the windshield under warranty?

I can't imagine going to my insurance company for something that isn't real damage.

Re: Cracked Windshield

Lingo,

Sorry to hear about this freak crack & while I don't know about any factory w/s defects,

It may not be 'real damage' to you, but it did happen...

Whether you were moving or parked... again, it did happen and that's what insurance is for.

I would talk to your dealer, but think you're going to have to put in a claim on this one.

Just make sure you get an OEM Jeep replacement done by a reputable & experienced tech.

Best of Luck on this & keep us posted...

P.S.- was in New Hope last Sunday!

Run a ball point pen along the crack and see if it catches anywhere. If it does, external damage is likely the culprit. If it doesn't, it is probably an edge crack that should be covered under warranty as a defect.

Great idea, thanks. Will do that tomorrow before going by the dealer.

Thanks, tho I hope you're wrong because State Farm likes to do their own lowball estimates, leaving the customer to fork over the difference between oem and aftermarket. Haven't had much luck with west-central Jersey Jeep dealerships, so settled on Bergey's in PA -- good folks, but 45+ minutes drive is a pain. We'll see if they come through on the windshield tomorrow.

Hope you enjoyed your visit to NH. Lambertville is worth a walk over the free bridge if you have time -- better eateries, too, such as the new Brian's if you're a foodie.

Re: Cracked Windshield

Hey Lingo,

Haven't seen any new posts in 6 days & just following up on this wild windshield story.

And wondering how you made out with it?

Did the dealer help or did you have to go the Safelite route?

Did you CSI find out what caused this crack? & Do you have ghosts in your garage?

Have you got an update on this for us?
Caring & Inquiring minds would like to know...

Bergey's service manager has to photograph and authorize the claim for Jeep, but he was out last week and wife is at a convention most of this week. So I'll probably return Thursday, and likely also put in a claim for the faltering QL while there. Damn, the Overland was nigh perfect for 11k miles, then within one week the windshield and QL both tanked!

Dunno about a haunted garage, but the house is 200 years old and sure seemed wildly haunted for a couple of years after we moved in -- and my science wife and I are about as far from superstitious as you can get. After a couple of years we figure the unhappy Quaker spirits (?) either gave up on trying to drive us heathens out (we were the first non-Quakers here), or decided we weren't so bad after all and put up with us. I'd like to think the latter, 'cuz for the most part our Quaker neighbors have been first-rate folks.

Re: Cracked Windshield

Windshield Damage 101:

Jeep refused to replace our windshield with a horizontal crack going halfway across from the right edge. The dealer ran a ballpoint pen along the crack and found two itsy areas where the glass flaked out above the crack, but I know at least one appeared after the crack further lengthened after a day or two. So at least one of these, arguably both because they looked identical, had to result from the crack, not a stone.

So after two unsuccessful trips to the dealer, I gave up and filed a claim with State Farm. Their policy is not to pay for oem, just authorized aftermarket, so it was back to the phone for calls to our agent, then the State Farm contract claims firm for glass, then back to the agent, then to State Farm HQ up the chain three levels. Finally, the chief guy agreed to oem mainly because I pointed out how there are online reports that some aftermarket replacements on the Overland weren't handling the automatic wipers properly. FYI, a PPG aftermarket windshield is $595 installed, but Mopar is $850 installed.

We used a regional firm, Alderfer, which has a solid reputation, and they were top notch throughout. They confirmed that it was a small stone that did the deed by whacking the glass right near the edge -- something neither Jeep nor I had noticed. They also confirmed my suspicion that the two chips Jeep cited as "proof" of stone hits were very likely caused by the crack, not causes of the crack. So, to that extent I was right, and Jeep was either legitimately mistaken or finding an excuse to pass the buck.

Yes, Jeep was correct that a stone was the cause, but not for the reason they cited. This is important to know, as Alderfer explained how during manufacture the adhesive and windshield characteristics in any one vehicle can sometimes set the windshield up for an eventual stress crack. Such a stress crack might cause a flake or two just above or below the crack, which has nothing to do with causing the crack but instead is a result of the crack.

However, thus far the WK2 doesn't appear to be having an unusually high rate of stress cracks. Some, but about what you'd expect on any recent model where it's glass-to-metal sans gasket.

Moral of the story: If I had to do it again, I would first go to a top-notch glass firm recognized by both Jeep and the insurance company and have them provide an expert opinion as to the cause. If it turns out to be a stress crack, then armed with this expert opinion one can go to Jeep to demand a warranty oem replacement and not let them get off the hook by citing one or more little flakes which are results and not causes. Otherwise, they probably would decline the claim and you would likely have to make do with an aftermarket windshield through an insurance claim. (I'm told my success in getting an oem replacement from State Farm was unusual/lucky.)

Footnote: It turns out that a stone hitting near the edge is far more likely to cause a crack than one farther in, as farther in there is more "give" to absorb impact.

Re: Cracked Windshield

Thanks for the update. A rock hit close to the edge is what cracked mine as well, and it looks to me like the unprotected edges of these windshields are going to be continuous trouble. Of course, my last Jeep ('94 Cherokee Sport) went through a windshield every two years for the 10 years I owned it, so I'm used to it.

The non-rain sensing MOPAR windshield I put in it was $395 installed (safelite), just as a data point for you fellow Laredo guys out there.
