So I've read other threads where people are having the cruise randomly shutting off and either completely stop working or won't work again until the vehicle is restarted, but I think my situation is different. This is on a 2014 Laredo 4x4 with standard cruise. It was working normally on Saturday, sat for two days, and then didn't work on Monday.
The center button to enable/disable always works and the little icon shows up on the dash. However, neither of the set buttons work. Restarting the vehicle doesn't change anything. No other changes in vehicle performance. Just rolled over 30,000 miles on Saturday and it has been 7,200 miles since last oil change, which was going to happen this week anyway. Maybe it's a glitch in the computer with one of those two mileage limits? Has anyone else experienced this?
Shot in the dark here, but in troubleshooting an unrelated problem I have, fuse F82 is for the Steering Control Module and the Cruise Control. Pull the fuse for a few mins to hopefully reset it? Or maybe the fuse isn't fully seated?
Your vehicle should still be covered under the 3-Year/36,000 mile limited warranty, co I would recommend bringing this concern to your dealership's attention. Before doing so, please ensure that you are pressing the buttons firmly in their center to set the cruise.
"This condition can be induced when the steering wheel buttons on the cruise control switch are not firmly pressed in the center of the button. The SET + & RESUME buttons have 2 contacts that are required to be made to ensure proper operation for customer safety. If only 1 of the 2 required contacts is made, the cruise control will not respond and may be disabled. Only 1 contact of the switch will be made if the button is pressed near the corners of the switch or if the button is pressed very lightly."
Thanks for the replies. The buttons were definitely pressed firmly and wiggled around. However, wouldn't you know it, it started working again on the way to work this morning. Weird. I'm still keeping my 7am appt at the dealer this Friday though. Time for oil and tire rotation anyway plus any other relevant TSBs.
I am unsure if this was considered but my cruise control will not engage less than about 40kmh (25mph).
From the manual:
ELECTRONIC SPEED CONTROL — IF EQUIPPED
When engaged, the Electronic Speed Control takes over
accelerator operations at speeds greater than 20 mph
(32 km/h).
I just bought a used 2012 Jeep Wrangler 4 by 4, very clean and low mileage, so it was taken care of. I immediately noticed the cruise control was inconsistent, working one day, then not working the next. I just ignored it, but then as I needed to use it more oh, I have learned that it work every other time that I start the car. It has nothing to do with how hard I press the button, because the button feels brand new, and is always consistent. After reading some others post on this subject, I tested it at a standstill, and it worked again! Confirming my theory with the every other ignition cycle hunch that I had. This help me confirm not only that I can turn my cruise control on before I even start driving, but also that it has nothing to do with my speed control sensor or fuse, and my steering wheel button works just fine! My best explanation right now, is some sort of glitch in the circuits processor brain?.... and then I'm talking beyond my knowledge... Anybody, with understanding about the sterring wheel button electronics specifically with this cruise control issue, please advise! thank you in advance, I look forward to your responses.
PS - I am a first-time Jeep owner, and I am loving it! Forest green 2012 Jeep Wrangler Sport Unlimited 4 x 4.
The Cruise control will disengage as a safety feature if it recognizes things are wrong or other equipment has problems.
As well, a component in the cruise control system can just be bad.
Do you have just Cruise Control or do you have the much more complicated ACC, that I'm sure has even more failsafes than the standard cruise control.
In my case, it was the brake reservoir low fluid sensor going bad, it would disengage my cruise control on long trips when the vehicle had been running constantly for several hours. Didn't turn it off, just would cancel any setting and not let a new speed be set. Turning it on and off didn't fix it, but restarting the vehicle would fix it..... ...it came in shorter and shorter amounts of time, then when my Brake Warning Light would come on from the erronous signal from a bad sensor, it would do this constantly. (Can be turned on, but no speed could be set) When I replaced the sensor, the light went out and the cruise control went back to normal, I've taken several 7 hours trips and the Cruise never disengaged once.....
Bigger lesson is, any kind of brake problem the computers can recognize, expect it to disengage CC for safety. I'm sure that's not the only failsafe.
Surely, if you have a problem with the ETC (electronic throttle body) that will light the ETC warning lamp, the Cruise Control will disengage and won't work properly till that is fixed. (i.e. I don't know for a fact, but it just makes so much sense to me, I'd be shocked if I was wrong on that guess).
Seen posts where folks found the button panel for the CC in the steering wheel was bad, a new fixed the CC.
