Cupped Falken Tires!?!

Hey all! I have an odd situation that I'm hoping someone can shed some light on. My Jeep is a 2013 WK2 overland and at 2k miles I changed out the tires from the stock 20's to stock 18's with 265/65 R18 Falken Wildpeaks. Everything was great up until a few months ago when I started getting noticeable road noise. I went through a few evolutions of troubleshooting but settled on the tires being cupped. My understanding is that cupping comes from either bad suspension, alignment or cheap tires. Falken's aren't cheap, I just had my alignment checked and the jeep only has 9k miles on it so I can't imagine the suspension is shot. Any thoughts? My concern is that I spend the $$ to swap out the tires only to be in this same scenario in a few months.

Any thoughts???

Have the alignment results? If so, send them my way. Alot of places and I mean ALOT simply set the toe angle and that's it. Our Wk2's are fully adjustable.

Re: Cupped Falken Tires!?!

Who said they are cupped? Have you taken them back to the place you bought them from? The tires should be covered under manufacturer warranty.

Possibly...I was running at about 36psi when they were new but now the TPMS is registering between 32 & 34psi depending on how warm the tires are

Yeah, 2 tire places said they were cupped. Apparently cupping isn't covered under warranties since it's traditionally caused by mechanical failures on the vehicle and not tire defects...or so I'm told. The place I got them from went back to the Manufacturer stating that the customer (me) wasn't happy with the road noise, which is the real reason I started investigating this in the first place and apparently can offer me a few bucks back for my tires.
They offered to put on whatever new tires I chose for a "good price" and not charge mount and balance labor. I'm thinkin' Cooper AT3's (which was my next choice after the falkens)

Re: Cupped Falken Tires!?!

Hey Ratchet,

I'll try to scan them in and post...would definitely be interested to see how my numbers match up! You mentioned the WK2's are fully adjustable? That seems right to me but my alignment shop said they were only able to adjust the toe. Makes me question thier aptitude!
Too bad because they specialize in trucks and 4wd vehicles! What chain alignment shop do you trust? What should I ask for when I call around for quotes?

P.S. - I'm in San Diego, CA...

Re: Cupped Falken Tires!?!

stilljeepin, it appears they are using a Hunter alignment system judging by the print out. There is no reason why they can't adjust the rear camber (which is out a bit) and the front camber and caster (definately needs some love there). A combination of your front toe and negative front camber would contribute to the cupping on the tires. No speciality tools are needed. Just the sockets to fit the nuts on the lower control arm and a prybar. There are also several extra steps that need to be taken when measuring a WK2 equipped with quadralift.

As for who I recommend with alignments? I am not trying to sound snotty, but have always performed my own. Have been using Hunter equipment now for over 20 years. I don't know anyone from your area but I can provide a number to the district service rep for Hunter and he could recommend a shop to you.

Re: Cupped Falken Tires!?!

This "good price" better be minus the full cost you paid for the Falkens. I'd be pissed. You paid $700+ for them, and they lasted 7,000 miles! I'd stay clear of Falkens, and clear of that store unless they do you right.

Awesome response! Thanks for the contacts too. I'll follow up to see if there is a recommended shop in my area.
Thanks!!

Tell me about it...I'll have to negotiate some more. Sux to be changing tires with less than 7k miles!
