Re: Damaged Key Notice?

These fobs must use alot of juice for batteries to go dead that fast! I've also got a 2002 chevy truck with the original battery in the fob. Thought it went dead on me a few weeks ago but just took the battery out and cleaned the terminals and it started working like a charm. Are these fobs constantly transmitting a signal for the Jeeps computer to pick up?

Re: Damaged Key Notice?

Seems like the prudent thing to do would be to pick up a spare battery and leave it in the glove box...just in case.

Re: Damaged Key Notice?

I replace all my fob batteries annually in the spring. Same time as I replace all my smoke detector batteries. You can buy a multi-pack of quality CR2032 batteries pretty cheap (all of my Ford, GM and the GC fobs use the same battery). Keep in mind that your fobik is transmitting continuously, not just when you push a button like in the old days. That tends to wear out the battery faster. It is not a battery life or Chrysler design issue folks. Expect to have to replace batteries more often. And while your new GC may be less than 1 year old, who knows how long that fobik sat around at the dealer, or in the manufacturer parts inventory at the factory. The replacement battery should last 18-24 months if you pay attention and buy fresh replacement batteries off the store rack, and purchase a decent name brand (my opinion on name brands). Inexpensive insurance. Best luck.

Re: Damaged Key Notice?

^^ What they said. I bought a five pack from amazon last year and keep them in the glove box. Can get Duracell or Energize for like 3-5 dollars shipped for all five. Can't beat that.

Re: Damaged Key Notice?

Hmm...wife was out in the Jeep this morning with her key FOB with the brand new battery. Walked up to the car, opened/unlocked the door fine, proceeded to try and start the far and got "Key not Detected". Looks like I'm gonna have to take a trip to the dealer.

I think I'll do the same. Last thing I need is to be stranded out of town with no way to start the vehicle.

As an aside, my wife just sold her 10 year old Chrysler Intrepid, a daily driver. She used only one remote control, and the 2nd sat in the drawer all this time.
Both had the original batteries in them. Never changed them.
Of course, our new FOBIK in the GC does a lot more.

Re: Damaged Key Notice?

I want to update my first/original post, so's not to make anyone nervous. The "Damaged Key" notification with no way to start the Vehicle. Just told my wife to retrace her steps with me, and tell me exactly what happened originally (my first post). All is as I said with one exception. My wife thought she was supposed to take the metal key out of the fob (the one used to open the door when the fob is dead), and tried using that one in the ignition!!

That's when she got the "Damaged Key" notification. I explained to her that the metal key is for the door, and that when you remove the "Start Button Cover", you're to insert the entire plastic fob into the ignition and use that to start the car.

I'm assuming that even with a dead fob battery, this would still work, and one would never actually be "stranded" with no way to start the vehicle.

Re: Damaged Key Notice?

I just had the same thing happened. About 10 seconds after the Damaged Key message, the rest of the dash lit up and I was able to start it. I was really panicked and pissed for a minute though.

Dealer says I need a Module Update as well as two new keys (both are sending intermittant signals). In a way I'm glad this happened, because my Jeep sometimes makes me wait 5+ seconds before it allows me to lock it from the outside after driving it. Hopefully that will go away when my new keys come in.

If I had actually gotten stranded, or this happens after warranty expires, I will be PISSED.

Re: Damaged Key Notice?

Just got back from the dealer. They checked for codes & said they did a Flash Update for the RKE (Remote Keyless Entry). So far, so good!

Re: Damaged Key Notice?

How did you change the battery? I have one acting up and would like to try that first, but can't see how to get the thing apart.
