Day 1 of GC Ownership

Hey, guys. Just picked up my first Jeep ever -- a new 2012 GC Limited -- today. I picked it up at lunch time and drove it back to work. I should be ecstatic... but I'm not.

Day 1, Problem 1: I noticed that the road and tires don't seem to be agreeing. The vehicle is tracking poorly in that it is darting (way too strong of a word -- more like a subtle snap drift) -- sometimes left and sometimes right. It definitely feels like the road is 'grabbing' the tires and making it track oddly. Sort of like how a vehicle follows the path of least resistance in the winter when there are slush ruts and the tires simply go where it's easiest to go. BTW, it has the 18" rims with Michelin tires --- all stock on the Limited.

The movement is very subtle but still noticeable and it didn't happen at all on my test drive -- which was on the same road. I'm not going to live with it like this so if *anyone* has any ideas, please chime in. I hate the thought of taking it back to the dealership already.

BTW, this is the same 50MPH road (Telegraph Road here in Michigan) that I drove day in and day out with my previous SUV and have driven on a nearly infinite number of times with my wife's car and ridden in other people's cars and never experienced this.

Factory alignments aren't always great. I'm more familiar with mitsubishi's but the way its always been is you get your Evo and go and fix the alignment.

One way to test this will be air up the tires to max load. This will sort of balloon the tires and reduce the odd feeling of tram-lining (what you're describing) by effectively reducing contact area and the roads ability to pull the wheel to one side or another.

This works real well on my evo with -3.5* camber. More camber also increases road groves and crown pulling the tires.

Thanks for replies. This *only* happens on grooved pavement. It happens at 50MPH for sure and even much higher (70 or so) on the highway and probably even lower than 50. When the highway changes counties and the road surface is no longer grooved, it behaves normally. I had not heard the term tram-lining before but it sounds right. I hate to overinflate due to possible wear issues but I can give it a try. I'm also very tempted to take it in and have them check the alignment.

These are Michelin tires, as I mentioned. Any chance a different brand would behave better? I've had BFGoodrich tires on my prior vehicle (2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor) and I loved them. Great lifespan and well behaved.

The wider the tires the more you will notice this. If you just picked it up the tire pressure is probably high. They ship these from the factory with the pressure higher than recommended so that the tires don't flat spot and dealers usually don't adjust them.

I agree. I find my Michelins behave best at 34 psi cold. Lower and they feel spongy. Higher and I get that hard bouncy feeling you are describing. And they definitely do not like grooved concrete pavement. You will find the tires handle better with more miles on them. Best luck.

+1 on that...

One of the 1st places I took my new Jeep (a 2012 GC) was the alignment shop... It was WAY out, it seems that the factory only gets them close enough for transport and maybe a few test drives.
