Re: Deer 1 - 2012 GC Overland 0

jgc4ever brings up a good point...if the frame isn't bent (as was the case with my '06 Highlander Hybid Limited that got "sandwiched" and was repaired at a $26K cost of repair) they may not total it since the majority of the damage would be considered "cosmetic". That might be what they are considering and you'll have to push hard for a total in that case. You may still be low-balled for value then since they will look at cost to repair as being more attractive.

Agreed. The deer aren't nearly as big as the elk and moose that could have
decided to get a closeup of your jeep.

I'd talk to your insurance company once they decide whether or not to total it.
If the engine shut down soon after the radiator hit it, it may have survived without
internal damage--but do your best to make sure any repairs are done or checked by a jeep specialist.

If they do total it out, ask if you could buy it out salvage in case you want any parts, or if possibly they would allow you to remove any mods before they salvage it out.

I dunno. Wouldn't an SRT be more likely to be able to stand on it to dodge the !!@@#$ deer?

Oww.

A totalled may be better in the long run, as the repairs would show up on Carfax and
cut your value notably.

Hopefully your insurance company won't send you a letter along the lines of
"after reviewing your policy and accident record...."

Just trying to figure out a replacement vehicle, pick up another rental in the mean time, and travel back home.
Ahh, you are not from Colorado then?

Sterling shouldn't be too bad, but the area from the front range west tends to scare the heck out of me when I can't use high beams. Big mulies, elk, and moose in increasing order of ouchness. So far, haven't hit anything bigger than a coyote, and that luckily only took out a fog light lens.

Many states now have set percentages that determine when a car is considered a total loss. When I retired in '05, NY was 75%. Even before that became law, any decent adjuster would have used that as a ballpark. There are two things that come into play. A late model car will usually have a good salvage value. If the insurer pays for the vehicle, the salvage value goes to them. Second, a car with a lot of damage, and a lot of technology is likely to have hidden damage. That is damage that can't be determined until repairs are started. Nobody want to go back to a shop and have to total a car after the repairs have already begun. In that case the insurer winds up paying for the completed repairs and the value of the car.

It always amazes me how many people think they know what goes on in an industry they have only seen from the outside.

And worse, the moose tend to be a bit hardier, and most don't appreciate being bumped into. Ever see what a big angry, although heavily injured, bull can do to a vehicle and the occupants?

Moose, not so much.

I don't pretend to know what goes on inside the insurance business....except to know that it's a business and they will invariably choose the most profitable route. Good hands not withstanding, I have yet to see insurance companies do things for any reason other than that of profit vs loss.

True. But part of making a profit is keeping your customers. That doesn't happen if you don't treat them fairly. Now, if you want to talk about how many people think it is OK to screw the insurance (or any) company, you'll find a long list.

I grew up in Colorado and spent many years there and still have lots of family and friends there. Sterling to Julesburg sucks for the # of deer crossing I-76.
