Re: Disabling remote start

The remote start phantom hit me, as well. The key fob was in my front jeans pocket. I heard an engine running outside our house. I looked out, since I thought we had company, but couldn't see any vehicle. After a couple of more minutes, I still heard the engine noice. I remembered reading the remote start post on this forum and wondered if, by chance, it was our Jeep. Sure enough, I went to our garage and found our Jeep fired up and running. Since then I always take my fob out of my pocket when I enter our house. It's a pain, as I frequently forget I don't have the fob when leaving the house and trying to open the Jeep's locked doors.

Re: Disabling remote start

Let me join the crowd as far as the Overland mysteriously starting. Went to the store Saturday, parked turned off the jeep, stuffed the fob in my front pocket and went in the store. Came out 20 minutes later and was stunned to hear the jeep running.

Re: Disabling remote start

If you leave the gear selector in drive (in garage) it will not remote start. there are other things to stop this but thats what your manual is for, read it

Re: Disabling remote start

You could also drain the gas out of your tank - your remote start won't work if the "Low fuel" light is on.

Seriously, I have never had this problem, nor do I ever think I will, since i can't stand to have anything in my pants pockets, however...

I completely agree with the OP that if someone wants to disable their Remote Start for their own piece of mind, then they should be able to very easily in the EVIC.
For heavens sake, there are 3 dozen custom settings in there. Why not one for remote start enable/disable?!?!
One shouldn't have to resort to crazy things like popping the hood, removing fuses, etc..
Am I right?

Re: Disabling remote start

I have had the jeep start accidentally twice. Heard the horn from inside the house the first time and looked out in the garage and saw it running. Second time it started while I was getting into the wifes car. Jumped in the driver seat of her car and hear the jeeps horn and see exhaust coming out... So it is quite possible. Does it turn itself off after x minutes?

Re: Disabling remote start

As others have said, I would simply install a CO detector in the garage, or better yet have a professional system installed that will alert you all over the house if there is CO detected in one certain area.

Remember that these detectors are only good for so long, and need to be replaced every 5-7 years. Same goes for smoke detectors.

Re: Disabling remote start

I have actually done this by mistake (and I wasn't wearing tight pants). I was taking a nap on the couch, rolled over, then was awakened by the horn honking. When I looked in my garage the Jeep was running. I know, I should have removed my key from my pocket, but I forgot to. It can happen, luckily the horn woke me up.

Re: Disabling remote start

It seems like a long shot... Personally, I've never heard of a person dying from having a car run for 15 minutes in an attached garage. I'd suggest that the far better course of action would be to buy a CO detector or two for your house and make sure they're constantly working. You're far more likely to die from a furnace or stove malfunction and a CO detector is always an important safety precaution.

Re: Disabling remote start

I have a 2012 JGC and it has happened to me 3 pr 4 times now since last April. I carry the key fob in my front pocket and its happened while laying on the couch or carrying something heavy at waist level or even leaning against the counter in the kitchen. It doesn't take much for the button to press and even thought takes 2 presses, it's happened a few times to me. My 3 yr old son's bedroom is right above the garage and if it were to happen in the evening, the car could run all night in the garage with out my knowing. Luckily, I've heard the horn each time but if the television or music were loud enough, who knows.
This truly is an accident waiting to happen and I would be surprised if their legal department hasn't pointed out the potential liability. There has to be some easy way to disable it. Thanks for posting the MOPAR number. I'll call them tomorrow and post if I get a solution.

It shuts off after fifteen minutes.

But I agree that it's a design flaw that we cannot disable remote start in EPIC SETUP.

Re: Disabling remote start

[QUOTE=Dan JGC;367957]http://www.fox2now.com/news/ktvi-car...,3720822.story

"The Centers for Disease Control says each year more than 400 Americans die from carbon monoxide poisoning, more than 20 thousand people visit emergency rooms and another 4000 plus victims are hospitalized due to the CO poisoning."[/QUOT

I guess all of those cases were from people who had remote start? With my snide remark out of the way, I understand what the OP is saying. When I am washing my Jeep sometimes I move or squat a certain way and it applies pressure to the fob it either starts it sometimes or locks unlocks, it is a touchy little remote.

Re: Disabling remote start

With forty+ years of driving, I've always had my car keys (or fob now) in my left front pants pocket. It's where I'm used to finding it and, heaven knows, as I get older I prefer to have known places for objects (still working on that for reading glasses )

I'm also blessed to work at home, and I sit in a nice executive chair (while I do my computer work) that has a wooden arm at just the right position so that it contacts the fob in my pocket and remote starts the Jeep. It has happened a lot (twice yesterday!)

I hear it happen, so I turn the Jeep off - but it's annoying.

So now I'm faced with either retraining myself to take the keys out of my pocket, or disabling the remote start, or ....

I just placed an order to that E-bay vendor with the fob covers. Once I get the cover and try it, I'll report back to the forum and let you all know if that solved the problem.
