This is my first post. I recently purchased a 2012 Overland 4X4, V6, White with Saddle interior. I purchased back in October and currently have around 4000 miles on her. I traded in my 2 door Wrangler Sahara, which I do miss from time to time. That being said, I love this vehicle. I love the exterior, the interior, the quality, the power of the new V6, etc....
My only complaint so far is in the wimpy heated seats. The seats in my BMW are hot before I reach the end of the road and thoroughly warm you. The seats in my Grand Cherokee seem to take forever to get warm and then only seem to get mildly warm. It's a small complaint, but I work nights and it's pretty cold when I get out of work. I use the remote start and the heat is going and the steering wheel is toasty when I get to the car, but the seats still feel cold. They do warm up but it seems to take a long time. Anyone else feel this way?
The WK2 modulates the seat warmers based on outside temp, I think. My seats get too hot, but do take some time (maybe three or four minutes). My seats and wheel are nice and toasty after a remote start when the outside temperature get to near freezing. Not so much when its nearer to 50. What outdoor temperature do you consider cold?
It's a function of your butt. I find the seat too hot at high and quickly set it to low. My wife leaves it on high all the time. (No comments about my wife's butt please!)
I like mine, they heat up fast (always on high), and seem to maintain the heat level on my lower back really well. I prefer low back heat to bun heat, because once your buns are heated, it leads to trouble!
My wifes 2011 Charger RT Max heated seats can be felt in less than a minute. However, the GC takes at least 2-3 minutes before you can feel them. Hers also get a lot warmer than the GC too.
They don't get hot enough, IMO. Our BMW and VW both got hotter, the BMW is incredibly fast to heat up as well. In the WK2 setting 1 is worthless and setting 2 is only slightly warm. I wish we could boost this a bit.
So, it seems it's subjective. Someone asked about temps here. I'm in RI. It's been pretty cold the last few days. It was 10 degrees this morning when I went out. I think, if you don't have anything to compare it to, they seem ok. But, anyone who has had another car with better heated seats will find these a little inadequate. Like I said, BMW seats heat up within seconds and get very toasty. Compared to theirs, these heating elements aren't so hot. Pun intended.
So, it looks like a potential for customization here.
One source for "upgraded" seat heating supplies. There are probably many more.... Just need to find the current capacity and voltage of the control circuit.
I am 100% pleased with my Overland, but I will say that my BMW (that I replaced with my first 2011 Laredo) and Ford F350 both got twice as hot as these seats, and much quicker. That said, I think they are hot enough. I would often turn the heat off in the other vehicles, where I just leave these ones on until I get where I am going.
My seats are not very hot as well. It was -14 C this morning while I took my kids skiing and snowboarding and they do not heat up well. My wives BMW get hot and you have to turn them down a notch after 5 or so minutes.
Is it possible that the saddle leather is thicker then the other leathers and/or saddle doesn't "hold" heat as well? I don't own either option, but would be curious to find out .
ex.
Laredo X leather= good heat
Summit Saddle= not so good.
I think my heated seats are great compared to the wk1, they get very hot after a couple of mins and have to put them on setting one, also the heat comes on rather quickly too, even my dad was astonished how warm the jeep got after a couple of mins of driving.
Hmmm, I don't use the heated seat function but my wife loves the one on the passenger side. And that is the only thing that counts. I notice that after 5 minutes or so she usually turns it down to the one light setting so it must get warm enough for her.
My seat takes about 5 minutes to get comfortably warm on high. It continues to get hot, and just as I'm ready to lower it the temperature drops back to the warm but comfortable level. I think there may be a thermostat built into the seat, but not sure. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to take that much heat.
I can compare to the heated seats in my 2006 Chrysler Pacifica, and the heated seats in that car heat up faster and cover the entire seat cushion.
Having said that, its my wife who likes the heated seats - I turn them on just to get rid of the chill, then turn them off shortly thereafter. She leaves them on, even in the summer.
On high setting, they do get hot enough (too hot), but I think it takes way too long. By the time it gets going, it's at a time point that my butt would've warmed the leather on their own anyways.
And the the portion that gets hot seems to small. My Libery also just heated a small area: like the WK2, just the 'butt area' and lumbar, but the area that the WK2 heats seems even smaller.
And the low setting? Can't even tell it's working; sometimes I wonder if it's defective.
My wife complained to me tonight that the butt portion of the seat in our 2011 Overland doesn't get hot. The back portion does. We both went for a ride and switched positions half way through. Verdict is neither the driver or passenger seat seem to have heat on the butt portion. The back in the lumbar area on both seats was nice and toasty. Outside temp was about 23 degrees. Her commute home from work was about 30 minutes. I'm going to have the dealer check them out because if they are working properly they suck.
Mine don't come near the warmth or surface on the seat and back that my WJ had. The outer area of the seat stays cold.
I'm thinking since there are a good number of members posting good and bad heat in their seats, there may be a problem with some units.
