disc cleaning

Hello,

I went to the dealer for an oïl change and they told me that Jeep suggests an annual disc cleaning maintenance. A friend told me it was mainly to remove the rotor outside ridge ???? As it was 179 $ I decided to wait and check with you guys.

What is that annual maintenance exactly and can it be done by the owner ?

Thanks J Guy

Re: disc cleaning

If "Jeep" suggests it, it will be mentioned in your owners manual. I've never seen it in any of them.

It sounds like the Chevy dealer who wanted to cut my rotors, for a similar price, because there was rust on them.

Put that $179 to good use ... somewhere else.

Nonsense. Dealer looking for a quick profit.

You should ask the dealer to show you where it says that service is recommended by Jeep. If he cant produce anything, walk out and never go back to that dealer again.

Re: disc cleaning

I presume the dealer has a similarly outrageous story for any alleged harm the ridge around the outside of the rotor is presumed to cause. It certainly won't hurt the brake pads, and since it isn't exposed I can't imagine how it could be a danger to anyone driving near you, as in a chariot race.

Time to find a new dealer, one with at least pretensions of honesty. This one is a rip off artist.

Re: disc cleaning

Thanks everybody,

I owned an Overland 2003 for 11 years and neved had any brakes cleaning without any problem, without any ask from the dealer (in another city as I recently moved). That's why I was asking the question. I'm quite sure it's about the outside ridge, there's nothing else to clean ...

Re: disc cleaning

I haven't had to do any brake work on my 2015 Limited, but on my other vehicles, it isn't even worth it to resurface rotors anymore. A pair of EBC, Powerstop, Powerslot, Hawk... brand name rotors (even cross drilled and slotted if you feel the need) can be had for less than $179
