Yes, of course.

The vehicle differentiates between the FOB being outside, or in.

Stand outside, lock the car with the door button, and the FOB on your person. Now wait 30 seconds while standing next to the car. Nothing happens.

Put the Fob on the seat, and again, lock the door with the button. Several seconds later, the doors unlock.

For this to happen, the Jeep must detect where the FOB is, inside or out.

When I'm inside, with the doors locked, the door did not unlock when my wife tried without her fob in her pocket.

Re: Doors DO NOT lock when inside with Key fob!

Some automobiles use weight sensors to detect what's sitting in the seat. It's to solve the problem of airbags slamming into small children and hurting them in a collision. Typically, the airbag is disabled if it senses a child in the seat, but I think Ford even has a system that alters the force of the airbag based on the weight of the person in the seat.

Anyways, seems like weight sensors could maybe also be used in conjunction with the keyfob... If the sensors detect a someone is sitting in a seat, then the system could let the doors remain locked when they're locked from the inside.

After reading your message I went out and ran a test on my 2011 Overland.

With my key fob in the house, far away from the GC my wife took her key fob and unlocked the Jeep, got in and locked the door using the door mounted door lock switch. I came up to the door and attempted to open it but could not. It was locked and stayed locked until she unlocked it.

I don't see a problem. Mine is working as I would expect and as I think it should. Is it possible your fob was in your pocked or maybe not far enough away from the Jeep?

I just now went out in the garage and checked my lock system. I set in the car with FOB in my pocket, manually locked the doors. Had wife try to open the door, it would not open!!

Re: Doors DO NOT lock when inside with Key fob!

Sounds related to the PEM problem where it won't allow the vehicle to start because it doesn't detect the remote being in the vehicle.

Mine also doesn't allow the door to open if the door was locked from the panel and the
key is inside the vehicle.

Thanks. It appears A_R has an isolated case. Hope you get that fixed A_R. Keep us posted.

Re: Doors DO NOT lock when inside with Key fob!

This is good to know guys... I feel better knowing that its working for most and that it may be an isolated case with ours.

Just to clarify... This IS with my Key fob in hand/pocket in the drivers seat, I locked the doors using the door panel and the wife was able to just open the doors WITHOUT a key fob from outside the vehicle. Perhaps I need to eat more pasta... I only weigh 175 and my wife weighs 110... So neither of us weigh a whole lot...

Re: Doors DO NOT lock when inside with Key fob!

Is it possible you have TWO key fobs nearby? One inside and one outside? Try it at down the street away from one of the key fobs???

Re: Doors DO NOT lock when inside with Key fob!

Yes... I had HER key fob in the Jeep with me. She did not have it on her. I locked hte door and she was able to still just open the door. Lets face it we both have a key... if we where both in the vehicle napping at a truck stop... we would not be able to lock the doors because we had two keys... Its the same situation. Honestly, even If I have both Key fobs in my pocket... I still should be able to lock the doors and they should stay locked. The door locks should trump/disable the vicinity un-locking feature until the key fob unlock button is pushed.

But YES I had both key fobs in my hand when I locked her out... and she walked right up and opened the door.

Does it make a difference if the engine is running?

I just tried what you did above and was unable to unlock the door from the outside. I would say your may have a problem but it is not design flaw.

Well there's your solution. Don't nap in your vehicle at truck stops.
