Doors DO NOT lock when inside with Key fob!

I found this to be rather alarming. If you’re inside the vehicle, and attempt to lock the doors with the door panel lock button... somebody can still walk right up to the driver’s side or passengers side door and simply open the doors... even if you want to lock them out! Say your wife is at the store late at night... she feels somebody is following her... she jumps into her brand new 2011 Jeep and locks the doors... Well unfortunately that’s not going to stop ANYONE from opening the door from the outside.

In my opinion, the inside door locks should trump the key fob "vicinity" sensors from allowing the doors to open. If you’re inside the vehicle and you hit the door locks that should be it! Those doors should remain closed unless they are unlocked from the inside OR a Key fob is manually pressed to unlock...

I’m a bit upset to learn this. The vehicle should be some sort of safe haven for my wife, should she ever need to use it. To find out she can NOT lock the doors when she’s inside is complete BS and needs to be addressed.

If somebody knows how to turn this feature off or adjust it please let me know. I plan to visit the dealership next week to address this issue... I suggest others should do the same.

Re: Doors DO NOT lock when inside with Key fob!

I completely understand what youre saying.......BUT....if people locked their fobs in the Jeep they would be complaining too saying the Jeep shouldnt lock with the fobs in the Jeep. Not sure if theres anything in the evic to change.

Re: Doors DO NOT lock when inside with Key fob!

I thought I read in the manual that you can force it to lock (from the outside door handle) with the fob inside, but it warns you with 3 chirps. It does this a couple times and if you push the button a third time it locks the doors.

Does this also mean that since the fob is inside then you can simple pull the handle and it will unlock as the OP suggested? If so then this is more than an inconvenience, it's a design flaw. You should be able to lock yourself in the car.

I assume it won't unlock if the vehicle is running?

Re: Doors DO NOT lock when inside with Key fob!

Please clarify.....are you saying the door panel lock switch does not lock the doors when: (1) door is open or when is closed? (2) when the engine is running or not? Four combinations of possibilities....

Re: Doors DO NOT lock when inside with Key fob!

The Key Fob can unlock the doors in two ways.

One by pressing the unlock button on the fob fro a distance...
Two by the vehicle sensing the Fob when in the vicinity of 5ft.

The problem is if you get inside your vehicle with the Fob in your hand... and lock the doors in an attempt to keep somone out that you dont wish to let in... They can simply open the door because the FOB is in the 5ft vicinity.

Its a great feature that helps prevent you from locking your key in your vehicle... BUT you can still keep this feature if the door lock button on the door panel TRUMPS the vicinity feature.

Lets face it, if you lock your key in your vehicle... your not going to be inside to hit the door lock... So all is good and you cant lock the door.

If you feel your being followed in a parking lot, your vehicle should be some sort of refuge... you should not have to do a special combination of ignition/lock button 3 times while tapping brakes... You should be able to get in and lock the door using the door panel lock button for safty/security sake.

BUT You should be able to press the door lock on the door if your inside... and lock the freaking doors. If they simply make the door lock on the door deactivate the vicinity feature then problem solved.

I hope this makes since... Heck, if you have the Key fob try locking yourself in and have someone try to get in... Youll understand right away how this could be a security issue..

Heck what if you just want to take a nap at a truck stop... Guess what, you will not be able to lock yourself in... And anyone can sneak up and do harm if they wish.

This bothers me more so because I purchased this Jeep for my Wife... I feel better knowing she is safe when inside the vehicle... Being able to lock the doors gives you a few seconds to get it started and in drive so you can get away.

I haven't been outside to experiment but... When you are inside the car senses the key inside kind of like you can't stand outside and reach in to start it. If the car senses you inside, wouldn't that take presedent and not allow the outside the car sensor unlock the door when touching the handle if it knows the key is inside?

I agree... one would think that... this is why even after 5 months owning it we are just learning that is not the case.

I thought you could lock yourself in up till tonight when my wife and I tried every way possible to lock her out... but because I had my Key Fob in the vehicle... she was able to open the door every time no matter what I had tried to do to lock it.

I honestly feel this is a big issue that needs addressing.

This is how the new camaro is and it actually uses a key. It also won't lock if a door is open.

Maybe Milous can chime in with a override way or something. I agree that is a security flaw but apparently every other keyless system does the same, I'll have to try it out later on a few cars with it and see if all of them are the same. It seemingly makes door locks pointless except for when your not in the car.

EXACTLY... I plan to take this issue up with my dealership... I dont expect them to do much but I will try to pressure them into at least reporting it up the chain... Its an easy programing fix... Just set it up to when the doors are locked with the door panel switch then the vicinity feature is simply turned off or over ridden. The door panel locks SHOULD trump the key fob!

This has nothing to do with the door being open... this is when ALL doors are closed and the doors are locked by hitting the door panel lock button.... This does NOTHING because somone can walk right up and open the door because the Key Fob is in the 5ft vicinity.

I would like to see this be fixed before somone gets hurt because they could not lock their doors for protection.

Re: Doors DO NOT lock when inside with Key fob!

Wait. I'm no scientific rocket, but does that mean that I cannot lock the vehicle while I'm inside, as long as I have the FOB on my person (pocket, purse, wallet, hand..)?

Someone correct me here, but the vehicle knows that you're walking up, and it unlocks itself when it 'senses' from the Fob that you are close, (assuming that you have the Fob on your person), right? You push the button/pull the handle, voila, your door opens. Then after you get in, shut the door behind you as you sit down, how does it know you're sitting in the drivers seat? How does it differentiate between you sitting in the vehicle 'locked', and you outside with the Fob wanting to get in?
If it doesn't, then that means that anyone can open my vehicle from the outside as long as they are either in possession of my Fob or I'm in the vehicle with the Fob.
The second scenario happens everyday. Can I be in posession of my Fob while in my vehicle and keep those out who I do not want in?
