Doors unlock when parking and walking away, No Horn Honks

Inspired by this thread: Question about locking fob in GC

When exiting the car and locking the doors either w/ fob, or w/ the armrest lock button, or w/ the exterior lock button, sometimes when walking away the doors will unlock themselves and the horn honks 3X. Okay, maybe it thinks the fob is inside (but it's not). Oh bother, so I just lock the doors again. An annoyance.

BUT - other times the doors unlock themselves while I'm walking away and the horn does not honk. I just happen to hear the clunk sound. Sure enough, I turn back and the doors are unlocked. This is more than an annoyance, if I didn't notice the clunk I would have left my car fully unlocked.

This happens randomly and I don't know yet what the conditions must be to recreate this consistently. At my recent 20K servicing I mentioned this, and they checked but could not recreate the problem. I didn't think they would, since it is very intermittent.

In the 2 weeks since the servicing it has happened exactly once.

I do not trust the door locks system (fob, proximity sensor, all of it). I always visually check when walking away after parking. The times when driving and my fob isn't in my pocket, I hang it on the open door lever so I won't accidently leave the fob inside. I never put it in the cup holder - not any more, at least.

Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Re: Doors unlock when parking and walking away, No Horn Honks

My issue is slightly different. I like to open the door, press the lock button on the arm rest close the door and press the button on the door handle. ( the book says to do this to "technically" set the alarm )
I did it for 5 years with my 2011 Laredo X with no problems.
( assuming the alarm was on )
My new rig unlocks itself 3 out of 5 times I hit the button ... ??
I just hit the button on the fob now ...
Whether the alarm is on or not, I don't know ... ?

I always lock the door with the button on the inside door. It and all of my other GC's always activates the alarm.

Re: Doors unlock when parking and walking away, No Horn Honks

An easy way to test if the alarm is set is to use the key (inside the fob) to unlock the door. If the alarm is set, it should sound.

But that is not the concern described in my OP. It's that my doors sometimes unlock when I've parked.

Try swapping fobs? Same issues?
Try new Fob battery?

Re: Doors unlock when parking and walking away, No Horn Honks

i have this issue too. Like OP said, so hard to recreate and is very random. First year, I was convinced fob in my pocket was hitting and unlocking. Now I have had few times where I purposely place the fob gently down and verify door is locked, jeep in my garage. Next day, come down and see it's unlocked.

mswlogo, not sure why would that help?

Ahujadaddy, a little unsettling, isn't it? I find it to be.

Re: Doors unlock when parking and walking away, No Horn Honks

I've had that mysterious door unlock happen twice. This afternoon was the latest instance. Nothing pressed the unlock button on the fob in my pocket as far as I can tell. I was actually standing still today when it happened.

I never use the fob or armrest lock buttons... always the door handle button.

If the red security light in the cluster is flashing, the alarm system is activated.

Mine has done this occasionally for over 2 years now. I've had it back to the dealers numerous times for this and the liftgate FOB requiring 4 clicks to open problem. The best Chryslers so called elevated level of STAR techs can say is: "Vehicle is Operating as Designed". Which we all know is BS, and that they don't care and don't have a clue how to analyze the problem.
