Drivers door lock broken

Hi guys. Been away from the forum for awhile but I wanted to reach out with an interesting problem. 2k miles out of warranty on my 14 summit. Drivers door lock is broken. When I lock the car I hear the horn but it doesn't lock. Locking from inside is useless. Have to manually push it down and then use the key from key fob to get in.

My dealership tells me it's around $600 to repair. I choked.

Has anyone had this problem and been outside of your warranty?
Thanks.

Re: Drivers door lock broken

600? Id track down the solenoid part number and change it myself. The door panels pop off easy, there's a thread on "Focal front speaker" installs with pictures that show the disassembly process.

Doing a search of various parts sites, it's looks like you could get a new actuator for less than $130. Should you wish to charge yourself a 50% labor charge, you're still no more than $200.

Heck, you may get inside the door and find the hook just popped off the mechanism. My father's car has that happen. It was a 15 minute, zero cost repair.

Re: Drivers door lock broken

Thank you for the input. Is it safe to assume that is the part I need? I may bring it to my buddy who runs a fiat dealer and he said his guys can look at it. I'm so not car savvy I appreciate the advice.

Before you go buying any parts, I'd pop the panel off and check to make sure you actually need them.

If you're unsure of what you're looking at, take the passenger side off, too and watch what happens (or doesn't happen) between the two.

As I said above, the actuator may have simply gotten disconnected from the lock mechanism. In that case, you save yourself the money and the problem is solved.

Another possibility is the switch may simply be stuck, like can happen with items like relays or similar things. Tapping on it may jar it loose and make it work again. Again, a free repair.

Worst case, once you have the door panel off and you find it doesn't work at all, remove it, take it to a parts shop (or the parts department at the dealer) and say "sell me this part". Even through the dealer it will still be far cheaper than having them install it.

If you really want to be sure, pick of the Haynes or Clymer manual for your Jeep. It will run you $30 and pay for itself in just this repair alone. Either than, or pull up a YouTube video tutorial on your phone and follow it step by step.

Re: Drivers door lock broken

The only 2015 manuals available are those for various Subaru models.
Select 2014 as the year and you'll find the Jeep manuals.

Sorry, I have a '14, so didn't look at the '15 year list. Most of the '14 should be the same for the '15. The price is certainly right.
