Electrical insulation burn odor

I have recently experienced on 2 Jeeps, an '08 Liberty and a 2014 Grand Cherokee, a very occassional, sickly, electrical burning smell enter the cabin and then disappear after a minute or two. On the Liberty it seemed to eminate from the engine or underbody.
On the GC, could it be related to heated seats?
Anyone encountered this and found the source?
JEEP, you're out there, surely you've heard, what have you got?

Re: Electrical insulation burn odor

Are you sure it's not coming from an outside source? It seems strange that two of your Jeeps start producing the same smell at them same time.

Not at same time or place. Other owners have had similar odors. It is a car problem.

Re: Electrical insulation burn odor

I hadn't seen anything on that.

I would keep a fire extinguisher in each vehicle in an easily accessible spot, just in case.

Good luck on getting to the bottom of it.

Had the same in our '14 GC over the weekend, 3 times over a 10 hour road trip there was a smell of burning plastic, seemed to be coming in through the hater vents. I have not been able to figure out what it is yet. But did find this: What is this metal piece under the radio center stack that gets VERY hot? pic inside!

Re: Electrical insulation burn odor

There was another thread recently where someone found the knee wall on the right side of drivers foot well is touching a very hot part of HVAC system. Enough so that insulation melted to it. I think it was a 2012.
