Emissions

Hey guys! Can someone explain to me if there are any disadvantages if any of buying a car in California when I live out of state? What effects does California emissions have over federal emissions?

Thank you

Re: Emissions

CA is generally the strictest emmissions state so their vehicle emissions standards are usually more than adequate elsewhere. I bought the WK2 in CA and live in CO. CO also accepts most new vehicles without emissiosn inspections as modern exhaust systems are up to snuff.

Re: Emissions

So there's no vehicle performance issues because of the CA emissions?

Re: Emissions

Many states copy the CARB regulations (17 of them, to be exact). So the vast majority of vehicles have 50 state emissions; the only difference might be that the Pentastar was at first not labeled as flex-fuel capable in the CARB states for emissions purposes. Using gasoline, there's no problems. Nowadays the makers are good enough with the emissions that most everything is 50 state legal.

It shouldn't matter one little bit.

Re: Emissions

Yeah the only cars I see that aren't 50 state legal are the odd euro diesel, although nearly all of those are now 50 staters thanks to urea injection systems to clean up the exhaust.

Re: Emissions

^I bought at Orange Coast Chrysler Jeep in Costa Mesa. Strongly recommend David Smith, Internet Sales Manager. Note that I had a really poor experience with other senior management at OCC, though that shouldn't be an issue if you're getting service support in another state.

At the time, I could not find my preferred WK2 configuration and had no patience to wait for an order. Southern Cal dealers seemed to have the most inventory on the lot then, and I got it shipped for $500. Most Chryco dealer websites have a good inventory with window stickers, so surfing around can pay off. A few other members here did the same thing.

You normally lose around 5HP for the stricter emissions. I am not sure if it is still that way with the new GC's.

+1
I paid the $500 and skipped the waiting. Of course, there has to be one available for this to work. I was lucky enough to find one someone ordered and backed out of sitting on the lot.

Re: Emissions

That's crazy! I was inquiring at OC in Costa Mesa myself just out of sheer coincidence. I've been in contact with a Fred Latasa, but I'll look up David for sure. Does OC accept the tread lightly discount or did you get a better deal than that?
