Engine dies while braking and turning

This has happened 4 times now in my girlfriends '11 V8 Overland. As you're braking and turning the wheel, no more then a half turn to the right, the engine dies. After coming to a complete stop, it starts right up and runs fine. Doesn't do it every time but it as now happened at the same intersection twice, coming off the highway once, and once more at another intersection. Vehicle as been to the dealer about the issue with no luck in fixing. Has anyone had a similar issue or know of a fix? Any help would be great, and thanks in advance.

Same issue here...2012 Overland V8 4x4...happens when slowing down (braking or coasting), sometimes when turning wheel (other times going straight)...but not frequently...very intermittent & no warning, just steering gets hard & RPM's drop to Zero...push Start/Stop & fires right back up.

Has had all recalls completed, including Fuel Pump relay & Crankshaft sensor replaced.

No engine ECM codes, so no evidence of it occurring, so dealer doesn't know how to proceed at this point...being it's difficult to replicate/duplicate & witness by a technician.

Love my Jeep, but it's concerning...in that if my wife is driving, or if we have kids in future, will it be safe to have them in it??

May have to dump it in near future & look at a 2018 Raptor or Cayenne instead, unless FCA can prove their quality & customer service improves enough to trust them going forward on another JGC.

Sad, but unfortunate & true...as too many owners are having these issues.

You stand to loose a lot of money if you unload your vehicle every time you have a problem. Take it back and make the them fix it. Have a different tech look at it. You may have to do some investigation yourself because they don't like to spend much time on problems that are difficult to find. I have been there too and they say "I have checked and no codes are present and it act up with me (in the 5 minutes they drove it)." Sounds very familiar!

On my 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the dealer replace both drive shafts (under warranty) in the front. I had a terrible noise when accelerating and turning from a stop. It still made the noise after they did all that work. I ended up troubleshooting myself and found a big rock wedged between the frame and one of the skid plates. When accelerating and turning, the torque of the engine cause the exhaust pipe to move and contact the rock amplifying the exhaust noise making the sound. Once I removed the rock ... all was solved! My point is they don't spend much time troubleshooting difficult or abnormal cases. They tend to "go by the book" and don't look "outside the box".

My dealer would probably just say it is normal and nothing wrong with it. You shouldn't brake and turn at the same time. If you have to do such a strange thing make sure that you are at the incline so gravity and not the engine has a chance to work.

Buying Max Care seems to me like a cruel and unusual punishment as I chose (and paid) to be stuck with those idiots couple more years.

Hey:

Got a 2011 O-land that stalls for no apparent reason on occasion --- I thought that this was because of the awesome TIPM recall bypass that was poorly installed some time back.

I am starting to see a common thread of people getting the CPS replaced --- I would like to try to inspect mine to see if that is the issue. No warning given before the stall, no real reason, and has happened while braking or turning (only). Also no codes thrown on the DIC.

Anyone have a picture of the CPS location on the hemi?

I should point out that in the example I gave earlier with the dealer doing work that wasn't necessary, I changed dealerships after that. The new dealership is top notch and have done the majority of my recalls. They have done excellent work and I would recommend them to anyone! They are Liberty Jeep in Patalaska, Ohio. Actually, they are between Granville and New Albany, Ohio. This dealer even took care of a problem that was caused by the previous dealer. Not many dealerships would even touch that one.:)

My Jeep just died in the middle of freeway traffic. That's the first time it died on me while going straight and not fast. This is concerning considering I've already had every single recall known to Jeep done on this 2012. I called my dealer for service and they said it'll cost $189 to have them diagnose. I said "uh, I don't think so" considering it's probably that stupid recall part gone bad again, but he said "a lot can go wrong." I said "give me a break."

So, I read here that the I could change the crank shaft position sensor (or something like that) and it might fix the problem. What do you think?

...maybe; but I still cannot seem to get a picture of where this sensor is to take a look at it. I think that it is on the back side of the engine near the oil pan, but a google search does not yield much in the way of a WK2 (only older models).

Similar to what is randomly happening with my 2011 GC Limited 4x4. Get the mail while truck is running in park, get back in and start to make a turn to the right within about 5 feet, then start to go down a small hill, feel the steering has gone tight, put the brakes on, and find the engine has stopped.

Put it into neutral, turns over but will not start right away then finally starts OK. Once started transmission will not engage in drive. Put it into neutral again and back to drive and it engages. Done this twice in the last few months.

A little different, but still along the lines of dying.

My 17 died several times in reverse (on an inclined surface). My 18 died in reverse (on a level surface), no codes or anything.

When your cars died, was the D flashing on and off? In my case the R was flashing on and off after it died.

Quite often, chaffing wires will short when there is a shift of weight in the vehicle or torque change, if the wire is chaffing it already close enough to touch something... ...So accelerating/braking or turning one direction or the other, cause acceleration forces on the loose wiring to move it around or torque changes on the driveline get the driveline to shift some and tug the wiring, and the exposed wire that wasn't shorted touches something to short it....

The CPS is notorious for causing stalling and not leaving a code... ...other things can happen as well and not leave a code....

This certainly sounds frustrating! Our team suggests that you visit a dealership for a formal diagnosis of this concern. If you need support while there, send us a private message or call 877-426-5337.

I have the same problem with my 2012 5.7 grand cherokee overland. Even after plugging it in the computer to analyze the problem, it doesnt show. It happens a lot when I'm making turn at higher speed than 15 mph. So i just slow down when making turns and it's more frequent when motor is relatively cold first start in the morning.

There are muntiple threads detailing this issue and attempted solutions. I have posted on several as I HAD this problem with my 2012 5.7 Grand Cherokee. It would stall every 500 to 1000 miles sometimes more often. As you noted it occured when braking and starting to make a turn.

I have now driven over 10,000 miles without a stall after removing and throughly cleaning the throttle body with crc throttle body and air intake cleaner. While the front side of the throttle body and throttle plate were relatively clean the backside had significant deposits thus the need to remove before cleaning. It is a very easy procedure and in addition to curing the stall problem I am getting a 2-3 mpg increase and smoother idle and acceleation.
