Engine Temp Varies 5.7L

Doesn't seem normal to me, but my engine (4.7L) temp varies between 196 & 206 deg F when driving. This is constant, goes up to 206, drops to 196 then back up & down again. Idleing it ranges between 202 & 226 deg F. I'm thinking the thermostat is defective. 700 miles on GC.

I have an appointment to leave it at dealer on Wed. I'm wondering if I'm wasting my time.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Re: Engine Temp Varies 5.7L

In cold weather I notice most cars trucks and diesels temperature gauges fluctuate more than they do in the warmer months.

Does the jeep display the actual temp?

I do recall learning in autoshop that the OEM's would make their gauges slow to react to fluctuations rather than precise instruments due the fact that the drivers would think something is wrong.

Who knows maybe something is wrong

Re: Engine Temp Varies 5.7L

I am showing approximately 20 degree difference or so between idle temps and moving temps. Outside air temp where I have been has been in the 20's and there is a definite difference between moving and idling. But I am not concerned, I just see it as evidence I will have good cooling when towing heavy loads especially during the summer when I need it.

Re: Engine Temp Varies 5.7L

I've notice a signficant change (20 degrees) in temp change on my 2011 GC Overland 5.7 L (from idle to moving). It's been pretty cold around here in the teens to twenty's - let us know if the dealer finds anything wrong.

Re: Engine Temp Varies 5.7L

Went to dealer today and asked for someone who knows engines (not the service writer) so I don't waste time leaving the car and have them do something that isn't needed so they can collect from ChryCo under warrantee. The service manager, who used to be a mech, told me I shouldn't worry, these temps are in acceptable range. If anything was not right, the the system would give a warning, i.e. the engine light.
Will be interesting to see how temp reacts in warmer weather. It's been 20-35 deg. here since I took delivery 12/4.

Re: Engine Temp Varies 5.7L

If it make you feel any better, I took delivery in August when temps were still in the 90s here, and temps were pretty constant, didnt see a difference when moving compared to idle. I havent done any heavy towing yet during the hot weather, but normal driving in hight temps didnt make a difference.
