The instrument cluster on the dash say a nothing, no engine light, no computer problems reported to the truck on the dash., radio still playing. I did not even hear the engine turn off, no sputtering, or coughing. I pull over put the truck in park, push the ignition button and starts like nothing even happened. This is the third time this has happened on the highway in the past three months. Happens about once every month at any time of the day.

Any thoughts on the problem?
I fear we are going to get many more reports of this sort of thing as this new start/stop technology ages.

Re: Engine turns off when driving randomly!!

There was a recall announced by Chrysler on this issue. I believe it's has to do with the fuel pump. Talked to manager at dealership when I had it in for service. He said not to fill the gas tank all the way up to full ( meaning spilling out of the hose connected to tank) capacity. Don't know if that will fix problem but expect another recall notice on it. I personally haven't had this happen to me yet. Hopefully it doesn't cause an accident for anyone whose having this problem.

A recall, notice 14V634000, came out a couple of days ago for the 160 amp alternator. References 2012-2014 GC with the V6. See the link.

Re: Engine turns off when driving randomly!!

There was an earlier issue about a loose ground wire on the passenger frame rail in the engine compartment that would case a sudden stop. Normally a fueling problem will sputter a bit, electrical is like a switch.

Re: Engine turns off when driving randomly!!

My 2014 did this. It was successfully diagnosed as short in the wire for the crankshaft position sensor. The wires were not secured far enough from the front differential, and within a few 100 miles the insulation wore through causing short. It took several days of work by a good technician and a little luck to solve.

Re: Engine turns off when driving randomly!!

My 2011 GC Overland 5.7 Hemi has also done this 3 times so far, normally whilst slowing down with zero throttle. No splutter, no lights, no warning - just the engine rpm drops to zero and the steering goes heavy. Nothing to do with cold weather as I'm in Qatar. It starts straight away afterwards.

I have another issue that might be linked - the car won't start from cold with the start button, it just turns over and doesn't even hint at starting. If I use the remote start from the key fob it starts ok though! I haven't been to the dealer with this yet as there is only one place and it is a nightmare to get to and English isn't their first language.

Any ideas would be most welcome!

Having been mulling my problem over, the only difference to starting using the remote key fob is that I don't have my foot on the brake so maybe the brakes are somehow causing it a, not to start and , b, stalling whilst on the move and braking at the same time? How can I check the brake booster vacuum line for leaks without having to go to the dealer? Or is it dealer only? Grateful for any advice/help

Re: Engine turns off when driving randomly!!

So after crank position sensor was replaced it ran good long enough for us to not think about the engine stalling everytime we drove it. A few weeks ago it stalled again so we took it to dealership for all outstanding recalls , one of which was fuel pump relay. Figured all of our problems were solved. Not so lucky. Stalled this morning so i immediately called chrysler canada with my intial reference number from one of our earlier conversations. Once again it has to go to dealer for diagnosis. Sick of travelling to dealers all the time. So now it sits overnight while they put a "co-pilot " in it. Next time it stalls my wife is to push a button that records all the current data before a restart. That is as long as it hasn't caused an accident i suppose. Has anyone gotten this fixed? I have told 2 service managers about replacing the whole TIPM last october but they won't listen to me even though i believe thats been happening in the states. We are being treated as the first and only 11 Overland this has ever happened to in Alberta. Chrysler Canada needs to step in and address this safety issue.

Re: Engine turns off when driving randomly!!

Mineis doing it identical to yours. TIPM replace 1.5 yrs ago, fuel pump recall done 4 months ago still doing it. Brake booster shield done as well, wondering if they bumped something.

Re: Engine turns off when driving randomly!!

A faulty TIPM module is most likely the problem;

You most likely had your TIPM replaced with another faulty one destined to fail like the OEM factory installed one did. Chrysler just introduced new redesigned TIPM's that are manufactured from a new supplier, different than the supplier who made the original faulty TIPM's.

The new TIPM OEM Chrysler part #'s are;

Mopar part # 68244870AA for 5.7L V8's.
MSRP for this new TIPM Kit is $869.00/Dealer Cost $546.00

Mopar part # 68244852AA for 3.6L V6's.
MSRP for this new TIPM Kit is $864.00/Dealer Cost $545.00

I will look into that thank you. I believe mine was new but who knows nothing would surprise me.

Re: Engine turns off when driving randomly!!

Had a data recorder plugged in for the past few weeks. Just got 3 stalls recorded this past weekend. Took it back to dealer and they now need to email the files to Chrysler engineering. Hope they find something concrete. If not ,this thing is gone and we won't buy another Jeep. They also just released us with vehicle with this stalling condition like nothing is gonna happen. Still dangerous as far as we are concerned. Will update when we get more info from Chrysler or dealer.
