Engine turns off when driving randomly!!

Just want to know if any one has had or heard this happen. I have a 2011 Grand Cherokee with the hemi and only 40k miles. It has happened tonight on my way home from work on the highway. Just driving along and the engine just turned off with no indication at all. The instrument cluster on the dash say a nothing, no engine light, no computer problems reported to the truck on the dash., radio still playing. I did not even hear the engine turn off, no sputtering, or coughing. I pull over put the truck in park, push the ignition button and starts like nothing even happened. This is the third time this has happened on the highway in the past three months. Happens about once every month at any time of the day.

Any thoughts on the problem?

My 2012 hemi overland did that almost ten times one of them while traveling with my wife and my four months daughter and the last time this happened about five months ago . I took it to the dealer many times but they said thy can't fix a problem unless they can duplicate it .
So try your dealer and wish for the best and keep us updated , good luck man

Re: Engine turns off when driving randomly!!

I wonder if it might be a problem with the key fob. The dealership replaced the one I am using currently and it started happening shortly after that. Could it be a key fob with a battery problem as I sometimes have a hard time locking
, unlocking, or turning on the remote starter even when I am really close by. I never told the dealership about the engine turning off problem, so I will take it in tomorrow and see what they say.

Re: Engine turns off when driving randomly!!

Took it to the dealership and they say that due to the cold weather we had in January, my brake booster needs to be replaced. Thank god it was covered under warranty, but its gonna take two to three weeks to get the part in as its on backorder right now. Have a rental until the brake booster arrives. They say the vacuum line from the brake booster was cracked and that they believe this is causing the motor to randomly shut off. Makes no sense to me as this problem occurred months before the brake booster problem in January. I decided to trade in my GC for the new Cherokee Trailhawk instead of taking a chance of it happening again. Better safe then sorry down the road.

A vacuum leak can cause stalling, I am guessing the leak was probably slowly but surely growing for a while - the computer might have been able to compensate for it most of the time hence it didn't stall every time.

Either way, congrats on the new Trailhawk. The looks are growing on me as I see more and more on the road.

If I wanna check my brake booster for leaks by myself , can I or only the dealer can do that ?

Re: Engine turns off when driving randomly!!

Have cars that stop when driving and cars that won't stop when parked. To really screw up takes a computer.

ps Cherokee definitely looks better than an Aztec but not sure I want an SAV I can see over.

This is happening to my wife's 11 GC Overland right now. Our local dealer just did the brake booster recall and then this stalling started to happen. MAybe they broke a line to it or something. They have it right now and want to give it back. I asked them who is going to sign off that this is safe to put back on the road.
When it stalls there are no safety systems in place(airbags etc). I also asked if they have contacted Chrysler Canada about it. Maybe they have dealt with it and know right away whats going on. No response from them after that conversation. Will go see them tomorrow and mention some stuff in this thread.

Re: Engine turns off when driving randomly!!

Mine is going in for this next week. It's a 2012 Overland/Hemi. I've had it happen three times now--decelerating to make a turn, and as I'm into the turn, it dies. Not cool, since this kills the power steering. I have to shift into neutral, then restart it while applying the brake pedal. I can manage it, but my wife would probably have issues due to the amount of strength it takes to maintain control through a turn.

Re: Engine turns off when driving randomly!!

Reading more about the TIPM and all the electrical issues it can cause it would seem that most of the symptoms are happening to our 11 Overland. Long cranks , alarm going off randomly , hatch going up and down on its own, stalling while driving.

It's at a 2nd dealer in 2 weeks as first dealer had no clue and did nothing yet released it to us anyway. So now it sits for another week at a different dealer.I gave them some info off of here and have since mentioned the TIPM. Hopefully it can give them a starting point to fixing it.

Re: Engine turns off when driving randomly!!

Any updates on this issue? My 2011 Grand Cherokee is doing this and the dealership is useless. It's happened 3 times now when I'm braking to make a turn. I've called chrysler and they're just as useless. I'm to the point where I might just trade this in and be done with Jeep/Chrysler.

Re: Engine turns off when driving randomly!!

Does it die like a switch turned off or sputter ? Does the tach go to zero ? I've seen it happen both ways (switch=ignition or injector commands, sputter: fuel pump/TIPM).

If reproducable, I'd set the Torque Pro on my cell phone to act as a recorder and monitor things like TPS, injector pulse width, rpm, timing, computer power, etc & take on a test drive doing Things Most Likely To Fail. Is likely that something is going wonkey when it happens.

Just be glad you don't have to unroll a Brush recorder chart down a long hallway...
