the scion TC i had with electric steering still used fluid as did the scion xb and even the 2011 i had 3.6 pentastar electric had a fluid res.
The '14 & '15 Grand Cherokees had an electric motor driving the hydraulic pump. The steering itself was conventional hydraulic, power assisted, rack and pinion.

However, the 5.7 Hemi still had a belt driven pump. I'm not sure what the CRD had. I never paid attention to the CRD since we all know they will never catch on.

Re: Extended Warantee

Yikes! All electric, eh? I would definitely be getting a warranty on that!

Not to be a spoil sport, but my original question was for a 2014 GC Overland with the V6 not a fire breathing SRT! Is the consensus of opinion to get the extended warantee or no?

You are betting you will have a major failure that exceeds the cost of the extended or even lifetime warranty.

FCA is betting you won't... and the cost of that warranty reflects their pretty sound estimate of the odds being in their favor--plus plenty of wiggle room for profit.

Side benefits of sleeping more soundly depend on how much you value them.

There is SOME benefit if you sell the vehicle with a transferable one in effect, but nowhere near what you'd hope. Folks with prepaid service plans may take better care of their vehicles on average, but cold, flinty eyed finance managers and bankers tend to just go with the numbers.

Re: Extended Warantee

Istowell, thanks so much for the frank answer, exactly what I was looking for. My only concern is that it is so highly "electronic" (used to be I could actually work on a car!), that if something goes wrong it will cost a lot quickly.

Does anyone know how well the '14s are holding up?

Thanks!

Roger

I have the V8, and after a few annoying issues within first 30 days, very well, but only just over 50K miles so far.

I do go for prepaid service and lifetime warranty as that V8 is one expensive pig to replace. But, the electronic gewgaws rate right up there. And I don't mind paying a couple K to not have to spend near 10K should that hemi gulp something major.
No idea how much that ZF 8 speed costs... but the non-Mopar ones aren't serviced by dealers, just swapped.

If you have ready cash and can afford [and are willing to] spring for major issues not covered by emissions warranty or similar, then the extended warranty may be a waste of money for you.... but you are betting that your circumstances won't change and that your vehicle never has a major dollar issue.

Murphy's Law tends to dictate that vehicles with the extended/lifetime warranty never have any big claims--but the ones where there is no extended warranty and no ready cash will. Probability is a cold-hearted bitch.

I've never needed an extended warranty, but I still buy them on every vehicle where available.

BTW, before you decide on buy/not buy, check with Zeigler in the Chicago area.
The contact info is on this forum. They'll tell you whether they can beat your dealer or recommend you go thru your dealer. Quite honest.

3 people gave you "frank" responses. MDBones said get it, xJoshxx said get it, I said get it, now Istowell. Many, many questions on here cut across all trims. Just JGC owners helping out other JGC owners. Keep in mind most of us either have or just had a MY14 of whatever flavor. SRT has/had nothing to do with it. You focused on electronics and yes we got sidetracked with a power steering electronics debate but in the interest of answering your question but you are right did not apply to MY14 but that's the way it is on forums sometimes. No idear where this "fire breathing SRT!" is coming from.

I hope you get the information you are looking for.

The '14 SRTs are holding up really well and go really fast.

The '14 Overlands don't need the warranty, they need to be replaced and are slow.

Of course your decision will be based on a consensus of strangers so you can ignore this.

I just bought a 2014 WK2 Overland with 60,000 miles. The dealer wants to sell me the Chrysler extended warantee for $1650, which takes the coverage to 2020 and 100,000 miles whichever comes first. We really don't plan on putting more than 8k miles a year on the car.

My main concern is that the car is so electronically controlled, it wouldn't take much to cover that cost quickly if something goes wrong.

Don't know if it's worth the cost.

Any thoughts and recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Roger
[THIS IS WRONG - SEE MDBones post below] I am not sure this Jeep is still eligible for Chrysler Extended Warranty. I think you still have to be under original manufacturer warranty to be eligible and yours seems to be over (above 36,000 miles).

Mopar vehicle protection plans...

New Vehicle plans can be purchased anytime within 4 years and 48,000 miles of the vehicle's warranty start date (the date the vehicle was delivered to its original owner). Surcharges may apply after 1 year or 12,000 miles.

Certified Pre-Owned plans can be purchased on Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep® or Ram Truck vehicles with an active, Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty and an odometer that reads less than 75,000 miles. Lifetime plans for Certified Pre -Owned Vehicles must be purchased within 4 years and 48,000 miles of the vehicle's warranty start date (the date the vehicle was delivered to its original owner).

Traditional Pre-Owned Vehicle plans can be purchased on vehicles that are no more than 10 model years old and with an odometer that reads less than 125,000 miles. Your dealer will complete a Vehicle Inspection to ensure the vehicle is eligible for coverage.

Most – but not all – Convenience and Maintenance (non-mechanical) plans can be purchased on vehicles that are no more than 10 model years old and with an odometer that reads less than 125,000 miles. Some Convenience and Maintenance (non-mechanical) plans have specific enrollment rules. Please visit your local dealer for details.

Re: Extended Warantee

FWIW, I just purchased a maxcare extended warranty good until 4/2020 and 100,000 miles (whichever comes first) with $100 deductible for $1,600, that covers what the CPO power train warranty does not.

It seemed like a good price, and gives me the peace of mind that if any of the multitude of electronic devices fails, the cost will only be the deductible.

Thanks for all your help!

Roger
