Re: First Oil Change...When do you do it?

I've always thought about taking my own filter and oil to the dealership for oil changes, but it's exactly THAT story that has deterred me. I've heard numerous stories of folks bringing in premium oil and then the dealer techs just use the drum oil.

I worry enough when getting oil changed at the dealership about whether they're actually doing it or not in the first place.

So did my '97, and I didn't understand it either. The dealer only charged $26, so I had them do it. Oil changes were the only thing that the Jeep ever had done.

Hopefully I'm through with little glitches on this one and oil changes will be the only service it will need.

Funny how it took 7 3/4 quart to get it up to full line, not over the full line just up to the full line. Just putting 7 in like it says leaves it at the add line. I put 12k on it a year so just doing one change in the spring and one in the fall
Could you tell me if you light comes on before or after you put 12k miles on??
Just wondering how long you can go before the light will come on with synthetic oil

If regular oil is a 3000 mile change synthetic is at least an extra 500-1000 miles past that.

A top quality synthetic like Amsoil can go up to 25,000 mi or 1yr on oil changes if you use their Ea oil filters.

Don't know if I would go that long on any oil without changing it.

Amsoil has had diesel trucks go 300,000+ mi on the same oil with just filter changes, additive package added at needed intervals and oil analysis. The oil is capable. It's the additives and filtering that determine change intervals.

The minder system DOES NOT assess the quality of the oil. It calculates the cold starts, mileage and a number of other engine and environmental data to show the reminder. It CANNOT tell the difference between 2 different types of oil.

Not yelling in the caps just making sure there is no confusion. The engine does not do analysis of the oil.

When the light comes on is only relevant if you are going to attempt to follow the manufacturer's oil change intervals. It's just a rudimentary reminder. It doesn't know what oil you are using.
The maximum oil change interval is 10,000 mi or 12 months per the manual for warranty purposes no matter what oil you use. Amsoil will stand behind you in a warranty dispute if you have followed and documented Amsoil's recommendations despite what the manual/warranty says. The light will come on when it will.

I've brought in my own synthetic oil to the dealer before, they only charge $5.00 (filter) + $10.00 for change and disposal. They have always returned my container with the left-overs or empty as well. Not worth it to do it yourself for $10.00.

I can see mine do it as their quick lube bay is visible to the customer area.

However we are just talking good dealers vs bad dealers. There are scammer independent mechanics as well. Sounds like you have a good dealer who is interested in your repeat business, hence the good deal and customer service.
