Flat battery

Hi all,

The following is a Jay Ay's first post from the export section, I've heard of this issue before and I can't remember or find what the solution was. Any help would be appreciated.

"G'day All
This is my first post. I have been following this thread with great interest since I ordered my 2014 GC CRD Laredo in early April. All the information you people have provided is very much appreciated. Was pleasantly surprised when dealer told me on 28 June that the GC arrived while many of you were still waiting patiently for your GC.
Pleasure has turned to pain(as in frustration and disappointment-at least for the time being) when, 5 days after picking up the car it failed to start - flat battery! I recalled that the night before I locked the car with the key fob remote and some time later went out to admire my purchase only to see that the center screen and the instrument lights were still on and wouldn't turn off. Called roadside assist and he jump started car and then off to the dealer - they couldn't find the fault. No problem for 5-6 days then it appeared again - off to the dealer straight away before the battery flattened and (fortunately for me )the problem still there and caused much scratching of heads. Some 10 days later car returned with a software "patch" to ,apparently, cure the problem. Off to the Vic. east coast for the weekend and following morning (Saturday) problem there again and no assistance close by so, as the car still started, headed back to Melbourne that day rather than stay till Sunday and have another flat battery but was flat by Monday anyway and car back to dealer-now waiting to see what transpires. Suffice to say the car is at present virtually unusable. At least I have been given a car on loan - a Fiat Freemont- not nearly as sexy as the GC. I wish I only had those small problems some of you have such as erratic heating etc. Oh, and the cruise control is faulty- when it's on and the"SET +" button is pressed to increase the set speed the cruise switches itself off and cant be switched on untill the engine is turned off and on again!?
Any suggestions as to a cure for these problems will be gratefully received!
At least the smooth power of the CRD and 8 Speed ZF box is all that I expected."

Sounds similar to what I had, after 2 tries they replaced the alternator and so far so good. I'd also check all of you connections to make sure they're tight, especially around the battery.

My method would be to put a DVM in series with the battery. If drain is over 50ma with everything off (200 ma will kill in a couple of days, I usually see 17-20ma & can leave for over a week), start pullong fuses until it goes away. If the alternator is suspect, disconnect.

Once you know what is causing the drain you can find out why.

Thanks for that - I will suggest this to the dealers. I have asked them if they have checked the battery's and alternator's performance as well as all the connectors, especially to the battery etc. and they say they have and all is OK. They have ordered a replacement 'main computer module'(whatever that is!) from your USA but I'm not sure if they are certain that this will cure the problem - they installed a new engine management module the first time it happened and that made no difference.
I am concerned that they may continue to replace modules etc. until, hopefully the fault is fixed - could take months!
Car is still with dealer and no indication as yet when I will have it back:confused:
