Fling that grease...everywhere!

I just returned from the stealership with news that I had bad rear axle seals at the CV joints, both sides. I had gotten under my GJ (w/Quadralift) to check something else and saw axle grease flung everywhere underneath at the rear diff. I took it in this AM to get it checked and received the news. Parts have to be ordered (of course).

So...the next time you are under there, it might be worth a look to see if there is grease hanging down where it should not be by the rear differential. Hopefully, mine is an isolated case.

Re: Fling that grease...everywhere!

I checked my Overland last night. I found grease everywhere on the left side. Looks like the cv boot cloest to the rear diff on the left shaft is leaking. Looks like a trip to the dealer.

Yes, that side is the worst for me also. I hope this is not a wide spread problem but I'm glad you were able to find it early.

Re: Fling that grease...everywhere!

I took it in this morning and they ordered a new shaft for it.

Re: Fling that grease...everywhere!

Did you ask the dealership if this is a recurring problem for others? Just curious. I had a brand new service writer last Saturday or I would have asked then. How long for the parts, did they say?

Re: Fling that grease...everywhere!

Same thing here. Hole in the left rear axle boot, grease flung all over. I had brought it in to get the first oil change (2500 miles) and get it inspected before a long road trip. They found this and said I couldn't drive it and part delivery was after I was supposed to leave so they rented me a Jeep for the road trip.

They seemed to think it was like that from the factory and were suprised it hadn't seized up...

Re: Fling that grease...everywhere!

I had a good look under my Jeep this evening. No issues. Thanks for the info though!

They said this is the first one they have seen, but dealers always seem to say that in my experience. They said about a week for the parts. How long did they tell you for the parts?

Re: Fling that grease...everywhere!

The same. Glad I found it though as we are getting ready to take a 1100 mile trip in 2 weeks with some off roading thrown in. Most welcome Rage. As I mentioned before, this is hopefully a couple of isolated cases but better safe than sorry. I'd rather mention it here and maybe save someone else a lot of grief.

Re: Fling that grease...everywhere!

Update on my greasy problem. The left rear axles shafts are on backorder, hopefully next week for delivery. They haven't said exactly why the whole axle replacement is necessary, except for the obvious grease leak. This might be interesting.
