So I'm in for my first oil change that is suppose to be free and they said I have to pay tax. Am I crazy to think that free means free? How do I pay tax on something that I'm not paying for...
They are recording it as a service and by law tax has to be paid on it but the dealership should cover it, not you. Looks like they are trying to save some dough.
I assume you haven't received your bill yet for the 2011 taxes due for your free membership on this forum? Scott should have sent the invoices out by now.
Bottom line is it depends on what state you are in. It's the same as when you purchase a vehicle. If there is a rebate, some states will only charge tax on the amount remaining after the rebate is applied, as opposed to other states who charge tax before the rebate is applied.
You guys have never used coupons for free items at the grocery store? You still pay tax on those items...at least in AL and TN you do. I bought 10 coffee drinks the other day that were on sale for $1 each and then used 10 $1 coupons...my total out of pocket expense was about $.90 for 10 bottles b/c of the tax. It is not really that difficult of a concept to understand as coupons are typically taken off the post-tax amount (YMMV based on state).
Yeah, I had a coupon for a $24.95 Oil Change and Tire Rotation at my Dealer. Even brought my own Mobil One (7 Qts. Hemi) and it ended up costing me $29.01 with Tax and "Disposal". Asked the service writer about a "credit" for bringing my own oil. No luck!

The tax is not determined by the dealership or the OEM. The state determines those rules. The dealership will not get one penny of the tax collected, it will all go to the state.
In California, even if you get a rebate on a purchase, the tax levy is on the full price, before the rebate.
I know it is pretty unfair, but your anger should be focused on the state, not the dealership.
Dealership has to do all the paperwork, deal with the unhappy customer, and submit it to the state, and gets nothing out of the deal.
Only thing a consumer can do is to vote out the people that supported these unfair tax rules.
You know what, it's all smoke and mirrors anyway. Why don't they just put on the coupon *Does not include Tax and Disposal? Then to make matters worse, the monkey who did my service didn't wipe everything down, and I found a small "puddle" of oil under the car the next morning. Crawled underneath and found oil dripping off the drain plug and new filter. Took a rag and cleaned everything off myself and all's well.
Would it kill the tech's to take a rag and wipe everything off as they're changing the oil??? I mean, this is a 45k vehicle after all. Now I know why people tend to spend more for Mercedes, Range Rovers, Porsches etc., etc. For the level of service they receive.
Service Manager told me he was putting his "Lead Service Tech" on my car to do the Oil Change / Tire Rotation because he knew how "particular" I am. Guess it didn't help! Still...Service "Tech" or not, what kind of "mechanic" does an oil change, and just leaves oil dripping off everything and doesn't wipe things off clean? Am I crazy, or does this seem like something even a child would know to do??

Just got my first oil change today at the dealer in Vegas. They sent me a coupon for a free oil change. It was absolutely FREE! The car went in with 4960 miles on it and interestingly enough, they put put a sticker in the windshield saying it was due for it's next oil change in 4000 miles, or 3 months, whichever comes first? Dosen't really seem to coincide with Chrysler's recommendation for 8000 mile oil change intervals.

Yeah its a recommendation not required i was told. I called them when I saw the sticker and was thinking WTF. I said the same thing and then when the customer care called me I gave them a 1. But I found the coupon and tax should be paid by them so I'm getting my $2.99 back.
For now on I will only be going to dealer with the service manager who actually tells me the truth. Its funny but this guy is very honest and tells me when stuff really isnt needed and what is over priced to the point when I should do it myself.
I forgot to mention in above post, we were passing through Vegas (don't live there) and stopped for the oil change. The service writer saw the out of state plates and asked if we were just passing through. When we said yes, we were headed for home in Utah, they took the car right in and did the service. It went straight from the service drive to a lift in the shop. We were on our way in 30 minutes. They'll get high marks from me on their service questionaire.
