Free oil change have to pay tax?!?!?!

So I'm in for my first oil change that is suppose to be free and they said I have to pay tax. Am I crazy to think that free means free? How do I pay tax on something that I'm not paying for...

Re: FRee oil change have to pay tax?!?!?!

They are recording it as a service and by law tax has to be paid on it but the dealership should cover it, not you. Looks like they are trying to save some dough.

Most items you use a coupon on to get the item for free, you usually are still responsible for paying tax.

If the price is say $29 and you get a discount of $29 then yes, you have to pay tax.

Re: FRee oil change have to pay tax?!?!?!

I've never paid tax for a free service. How about warranty work? Are you supposed to pay tax on that too?

Never heard of such a thing.

Re: FRee oil change have to pay tax?!?!?!

Bottom line is it depends on what state you are in. It's the same as when you purchase a vehicle. If there is a rebate, some states will only charge tax on the amount remaining after the rebate is applied, as opposed to other states who charge tax before the rebate is applied.

I assume you haven't received your bill yet for the 2011 taxes due for your free membership on this forum? Scott should have sent the invoices out by now.
