Front and rear axle fluid change interval.

Hi all.

How often should the front and rear axle fluids be changed? My manual says to "inspect" every 20K miles. It only gives guidance on when to change the fluid for police, off-road, taxi, fleet, towing, etc. It doesn't give any guidance for regular city street/highway driving. Thoughts? How often do you change your front and rear axle fluids?

2013 WK2 with 30K miles.

Thank you.

They don't specify anywhere what the fluid change interval is, so be prepared for a hundred different answers. I have 37xxx mi on my 2013 and Iv'e got a couple plans to go off roading this summer so I'll change it after that in the fall. Probably have 42xxx miles by then.

Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 - Maintenance information and schedules

Per the above link, should be replaced every 36,000 miles if you fall under service interval "A", or every 18,000 miles if you fall under service interval "B".

Service Interval "A" (Light)

Service Interval "A" is for vehicles that are not operated under any of the conditions listed under Schedule "B." Most vehicles are operated under the conditions listed for Schedule "B". Use the schedule that best describes your driving conditions. Where time and mileage are listed, follow the interval that occurs first.

Service Interval "B" (Heavy)

Follow this schedule if you usually operate your vehicle under one or more of the following conditions:

Day or night temperatures are below 0C (32F)
Stop and go driving
Excessive engine idling
Driving in dusty conditions
Short trips of less than 16.2 km (10 miles)
More than 50% of your driving is at sustained high speeds during hot weather, above 32C (90F)
Trailer towing
Taxi, police, or delivery service (commercial service)
Off-road or desert driving
If equipped for and operated with E-85 (ethanol) fuel.

Front and rear axle fluid change interval.

If you open the PDF link on the page posted above it shows the Maintenance Schedules which are found starting on page 684 in the manual. It states a 20,000 mi. inspection only for the axles. There is no listed replace schedule. The transfer case is listed as a 30,000 mi. Inspection and then again separately to replace every 100,000 mi. If not used for Taxi, Fleet, Off-Road, of Frequent Trailer Towing.

Re: Front and rear axle fluid change interval.

You can always follow the factory maintenance schedules and just inspect the fluid in the F+R diffs every 20k miles, and replace if necessary. I replaced my diff fluids at 18k miles and the fluid that came out looked/smelled ok, and there were no visible metal shavings.

I use a combination of the factory maintenance schedule and the intervals found on the WK2Jeeps website for my maintenance needs.
