Front recovery hook/eye

I recently bogged my Jeep Grand Cherokee 2012 and was snatched out. In doing so the nut that the recovery hook/eye screws into broke away from the whatever it was welded to at the front of the chassis. I am about to embark in discussions with my dealer and Jeep over the fact that this should come under warranty as the recovery hooks are for just that and it failed.

Has anyone had a similar problem and did Jeep come to the party and pay for it to be refitted to the car under warranty?

I have read in this forum that I am probably lucky to have even had a recovery option on the front of my car at all, but seeing as I do I expect it to work.

Re: Front recovery hook/eye

If you're talking about the eye-bolt which screws into the hole in the bumper, then you overloaded a towing point. It's not for recovery.

If you damaged one of the proper recovery points, post some photos so we can have a gander.

Cheers,
Steve

As Steve said the jeep supplied towing eye is NOT a recovery point.
You need to buy a proper recovery point
Try Chief products web site
They have good recover points for both left and right side.

Re: Front recovery hook/eye

Thanks Fellas. Funny how they don't mention anything like that in the manual. YEs it was the eyebolt that passes through the bumper and screws into car. I assume that's the only recovery point on the front of the car, only one I could find anyway? The owners manual calls them towing eyes and goes on to say "CAUTION - Tow eyes are for emergency use only, to rescue a vehicle stranded off road. Do not use for highway towing etc etc.
So I was stranded off road, I used the tow eye and it failed.

Wow... that wording is a legal minefield. I'm going to admit that I've never opened the manual, as we have Snuke on call for that.

If you want a replacement cage and nut assembly, I have one in Perth. That said, if you're going off road you really need to spend the dough on at least one decent recovery point. Chief Products are the only option for DIY installation on both sides.

Cheers,
Steve
