This is honestly pathetic now. Jeep has to fix this asap with a nationwide 'drop by whenever you want' recall. I want the power tailgate removed with a manual one NOW. There is nothing worse then coming to the back of the Jeep after shopping at Best Buy/Grocery Store when you can't even open up the tailgate to load your items. It just beeps and struggles, then shuts closed. You try to open it manually, but no...it feels like you're going to rip off the back. I'm serious...it does...and there's no way I'm going to put my strength into opening it even though I know I can probably rip it open to get my stuff in. It should just be easy!

This should be a recall issue big time. It is winter everywhere now...even in Florida. I can't be the only one with this issue. I'm resurfacing this issue again...I mentioned it before, but I am now RED with anger because I went backwards. I had an '06 Overland with manual tailgate and that worked flawlessly.

JEEP messed this one up big time...one small step forward technology wise = 3 steps backwards for customer satisfaction due to a faulty liftgate. Did they forget about winter and the cold when designing this liftgate? I have no ice jamming in the sides, it's not -30, it's just a normal winter day with snow on my vehicle. GIVE ME A BREAK!!! I want to use my liftgate now...it's not spring until April 2011!
As frustrating as it is you need to try to stay calm. Driving yourself crazy over it will not fix the problem. I don't know if you are the one who had a leak from the roof. What I am getting at is if you have a leak then you may have some ice formed somewhere (around the hinges???) that can interfere with opening/closing. Just a guess...

Nah...my roof isn't leaking...the only issue I have is with the liftgate.

From what others have said, it doesn't sound normal, and the dealer should be able to fix it. You WILL be able to load your packages with style!

Sure the dealer will fix it. The problem is finding time to waste going there in the first place, waiting for parts, return visits... ... Hell, I already had to go there when I noticed the passenger side molding wasnt put on at the factory. This makes two dealer trips in 1500 miles. I like the car, but I dont have enough free time for this. This is a new car: things should work.

.5" of ice on mine this morning. Lift gate cracked the ice and opened right up with no problems. I sure do miss my garage this week.

I definitely think there are some issues with the new motor design. From the looks of it the new ford explorer has the same lift gate system.

Sounds like more an actuator issue.

It went bad on the one I originally ordered; when they finally got around to digging it out of the parking lot for shipping, they had to replace the actuator first.

Re: Frozen Power Liftgate becoming a pain in the a$$...it's embarassing!

I took my vehicle in today for the liftgate issue and they resolved it. When replicating the issue the liftgate wouldn't even open when they tried opening it so that wasn't hard.

The problem was with the Electric Rear Liftgate Prop so they replaced it entirely.

It opens now with a bit more force and I can close it manually with ease...faster then waiting for it to beep close automatically.

Now the true test will be if it opens when it's cold out because it worked when they showed me and it worked in my underground parkade. But it sounds and operates different so I'm confident the problem is solved.

Justin - I like the fact you posted the resolution to your issue.

+1. I expect a few trips to the dealer in the beginning for quality control issues. My Volvo had a couple things in the beginning. In the last 5 years I've only had to have one noisy wheel bearing replaced. I hope the WK2 is that reliable after the bugs get worked out.

Re: Frozen Power Liftgate becoming a pain in the a$$...it's embarassing!

Just for completeness on this thread, there is a new TSB about the rear liftgate operation. May not be the exact problem the OP reported, but indicates that Jeep is responding to problems with the liftgate.

From Milous' WK2Jeeps.com site:
