Re: Fuel door doesnt open

A little WD40 on the hinge and latch seemed to solve the problem for me.

Re: Fuel door doesnt open

Mine has been doing this as well. I was at the pump on E, the door wouldn't open so i jammed my debit card into the bottom of the door, walked back and pressed the button. Door pops open, card falls to the ground. I could almost deal with that. My fuel door is now really loose to the point where it doesn't close without reaching into the hinge area trying to re-align it. I ordered my 14 in Feb of 2013. It now has 33k miles. Taking it to the dealer tomorrow.

btw.. be carefull if reaching into the hinge area, there is a very sharp steel spring clip in there.

Re: Fuel door doesnt open

I had this problem and didn't feel like taking it in so I did some digging. If you stick your finger into where the hinge is, you'll feel a metal spring. Bend it out a little (push on it) and it should start popping open again, as long as the actuator is moving. That's what provides the energy for gas door to pop open.

You can see it in this pic.

Re: Fuel door doesnt open

Thanks 17Hemi. That's a great pic you posted. It's been almost 2 years since I first had my problem and it hasn't happened again. I still think mine was related to weather temps. I'm going to see if I can come up with a mirror to try and see that spring inside. In your pic it looks like it might be a bi-metalic material (gold colored) and probably bends pretty easy.

Re: Fuel door doesnt open

Have had the same problem on and off. WD40 does help but in an emergency pull the manual cable in the cargo compartment. It seems to open the latch farther.

Yes, forgot about discovering the emergency release inside the cargo compartment. Remove the little box and there is a cable there to pull which releases the fuel door. After finding it I guess that's why I never had a problem with the button release again.

Re: Fuel door doesnt open

Nicks 2014,
The door on my 2014 June build got real loose while on a trip in Canada. Happened at 34500 miles but by time I got home and took it to the dealer it had 35900 miles and the dealer wouldn't fix it on Warranty. MaxCare took care of it with the $100 deductible. It takes a while for them to get the parts and paint the door. The door and the part around the filler neck look a lot more substantial.

Re: Fuel door doesnt open

What!!! You need to complain to FCA and get your $100 deductible reimbursed. The manufactures warranty is very specific 36 months, 36,000 miles not 35,900.

Re: Fuel door doesnt open

Just brought home two brand new 2017 JGC Overlands (one for me and one for the wife). And the fuel door is not opening on either car! It's as if there is no spring in there at all. You can hear the mechanism function but nothing happens. When I use the emergency release, I have to pull the cable with with my right hand and then use my left hand to open the actual door. I will be calling the dealer on Monday.

Just tried filling up my 2017 altitude edition and same issue! Door won't open! I'm at the gas station going wtf! Did a little google search on my phone and found this thread. Bent the spring a little in the hinge with my finger and now it works everytime! Don't take it to the dealer cuz they will take their time and never figure this out. I work for a company that builds aftermarket parts for jeep wranglers and I refuse to use a dealer for repairs. My 2010 wrangler hasn't been to a dealer since the day I brought her home. They are clueless!

Thank you for the picture and advice! You saved me a trip to the dealer and a ton of stress! I owe you a beer!

Thank you Hemi 17
On the trip home from purchasing had to approach strangers at gas station in freezing cold ask them to push release while I opened fuel door.
Awesome to find your picture which enabled me to make the adjustment!
