Full Engine Replacement

I have a 2011 3.6L 4X4 Laredo with 13,000 miles on it. Well it had 13,000 miles on it. When I get it back the motor will have 0 miles on it.

Here's the story. About a month ago I noticed that when I started up my JGC it seemed a little louder than normal, but nothing too concerning and since it seemed to be running fine I really did not think anything of it. Well last Friday while driving into work the check engine light came on. I checked the gas cap and drove it a couple more times to see if the light would go off, all while making an appointment to drop off the vehicle on Monday if the problem persisted. While starting it up on Saturday to check on it the noise at start up was even louder and it sounded like something was seriously wrong so I did not drive it again until I brought it in yesterday.

Apparently my dealer tried a few things that Chrysler suggested and the problem persisted so Chrysler told them they would be sending them a brand new engine tomorrow and I should get my Jeep back Friday or Monday. Apparently a sprocket failed, which caused multiple other failures and the engine could not be saved.

I have some mixed emotions on this one as you might guess. The engine is only around a year old and only has 13,000 miles on it and it already failed, so to me that is troubling. That being said I like that Chrysler is not jerking me around and trying to fix a number of small things, but rather they are just ponying up and giving me a brand new engine, which apparently will cost them around 5 large.

Has anyone else experienced this on their WK2? I have searched through the forums and could not find anything on it. Does anyone with a little more car experience than myself know what the outlook should be for a Jeep with a full engine replacement. Will it be like brand newish, or should I consider this something that I will have to continue to deal with? Thanks in advance.

Re: Full Engine Replacement

There was a member that needed a new engine but Jeep wouldn't cover it due to them claiming that the engine had water in it. I guess you are lucky that you are getting a crated engine and not a rebuild engine. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Re: Full Engine Replacement

Tmw, there have been other Pentastar cases such as yours, will search and link a few. Can't quite recall, but seem to think it was a batch that first was produced south of the border. Glad that Chryco is backing you up with a new powerplant.

Thanks Moose that would be appreciated. I did some searches and found the stuff about the engines made in Mexico with the issues, but the articles I found said it was International Jeeps only.

^It may have just been the overseas units as you suggest, not sure. Do you know where and when your engine was assembled?

Thanks Moose those are the 2 threads I had previously seen. Not sure of my exact build date or location. Though I would not be surprised if it was one from those batches as the symptoms match.

Re: Full Engine Replacement

I would suspect they are sending a new longblock and the techs will just have to bolt the accessories back on. Should be trouble free.

Re: Full Engine Replacement

Just as an FYI if they are replacing the entire engine your "outlook" will be just like a new car (with a slightly used drivetrain). You'll have the regular break in period but after that you should be golden.

Cool, thanks. I was wondering if that would be the case. I was told it would be a brand new engine and that basically I would be back at 0 on the odometer, even though it would say 13,000. I did not know if the dealer was just blowing smoke or not when they told me that though.
