Getting the hitch cover back on?

I swear this Jeep is trolling me. First with the oil filter from the factory not being the same size as the listed part #, now with the hitch cover.

How the heck do I get the hitch cover back on? I took mine off for the first time tonight to put a cargo carrier rack up for test fit... The cover won't go back on right (the 2 center tabs won't grab all the way).

This can't be that difficult.

There are 4 slots across the top. There are 4 tabs on the cover. I can tilt it up and get what seems like all 4 tabs in their respective slots, but no matter how I tilt it back to put the bottom screws in the middle 2 pop out. It almost seems as if they aren't long enough...

I will say that the cover was on there pretty well when I took it off the first time. Those middle 2 tabs seemed to almost be 'snapped' in place. Looking at it now, I don't see any way in which they would snap (the width of the "[" shaped snap is wider than the thin plastic of the rear bumper, if that makes any sense).

So now I have a nice little gap down there:

I would imagine that the way this cover attaches is the same across all trims. So, any tricks!?!?

That is good for you...guess I'll have to run by the dealer and let them see it.

Re: Getting the hitch cover back on?

I had the same problem this past weekend on my 14. The middle 2 tabs would not slide into place while the outside 2 would go in easy. On Monday I ended up crawling underneath the back bumper and squeezed my hands up in the cavity of the hitch cover and squeezed the tabs into place by grabbing the hitch cover and pressing my thumbs on the under side of the tap with the rest of my fingers pulling down on the bumper.

Not exactly convienent but it got it looking right and it is not going anywhere. I know on a used 2012 I was looking at a few weeks ago the hitch cover poped right back on with no fuss so I am not sure what changed, but know it is not just yours.

I have pretty big hands and I had to try a few times pressing them into place and then squeezing my hands back out from behind the hitch cover without the tabs coming out of their correct position but I eventually got it to stay.

Hope this makes sense and helps a little bit.

Andy

Re: Getting the hitch cover back on?

Yea, makes perfect sense. I tried that a bit sitting behind it, but could never get it to stick. I'll have to try the whole 'lay down under the back' method when I get home today.

Re: Getting the hitch cover back on?

To follow-up: Wedging my arm up the back between the muffler and the rear cover let me snap them in. I have some long and lanky arms and could barely get to the clips - had to go from each side to get the respective tab 'snapped' into place and have a few scratches damn near my armpit to show for it.

Not sure if that is the route you were going sandman, but thanks for the tip either way.

Re: Getting the hitch cover back on?

I was actually able to get my hands wedged up there under the cover although the hitch cover was bent out quite a bit when I was doing it. It sucks that it is such a pain as I will probably try and tow a small trailer every once in a while. I would hate to break it and I might take it in to show someone at the dealership to see if maybe they had a bad batch of covers come through. It will be interesting to see if anyone else will have this problem. Glad you were able to get yours back on.

Re: Getting the hitch cover back on?

I am having this same issue on my 12' SRT. My truck didn't come with a hitch so I ordered up the SRT bezel and I can't get it to snap into place for the life of me!!!

Re: Getting the hitch cover back on?

Yea, it's a pain. I have to get underneath and snake my arm up and back - starting between the lower center cover and the muffler/resonatory - and snap the tabs into place...
