Re: Getting "Vehicle phone requires service message"

My appointment is Tuesday. I will let everyone know how this works out. I'm pretty sure I've seen this "scene" before and don't have high hopes, but I'm thinking they may be able to do the recall that I just received (brake booster) as the icing on the cake.

So, in 3 weeks of having the beast, I now have hail damage (to be repaired in late July since everyone else in the area has the same issue -$275 for PDR), new windshield for the chip/scratch ($848), brake booster recall and this lovely issue.

Glad to have traded my 2013 x5! Lol

Oh yeah, one of my coworkers got the same message in his 2014 SRT on Friday. Sadly, he doesn't use the Uconnect features so he's less concerned about it than us. As a consequence, I told him that if he doesn't setup his voicemail on his cell phone and start his SRT from an app or computer in the next month, I am taking possession of his Jeep until further notice (while he still makes those payments, of course).

Re: Getting "Vehicle phone requires service message"

My 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, built in March 2013, suffered a triple failure last week: Airbag Sensors, Seatbelt Sensors, and "Vehicle Phone Requires Service."

I took my Jeep to the dealer which sold the car to me this week. Two days later the service staff told me that needed parts were unavailable until July 24! I did learn that if a Jeep is in the dealer's shop for 30 days, Chrysler will buy the car back. Because I distrust my Jeep, I won't drive it and told the service staff to keep the car until the parts arrive. I hope that Chrysler will offer to buy it back it from me about July 1. The dealer has given a loaner car.

Do you know if this is a single part or multiple parts?

The airbag sensor is backordered until July 24, 2014.

That's a bummer ... One hell of a #jeepsummer huh? And if you don't mind what kind of loaner did you get from your dealer? Dodge Dart or Fiat 500? I do a lot of camping, mountain biking, kayaking ... I will be VERY UPSET if what you are saying is true and will be stuck in some small piece of @#$# that will not take my family along with our kayaks and bikes.

Will report back on Monday!

Re: Getting "Vehicle phone requires service message"

...The adventure continues.

So in a last ditch attempt to avoid the hours at the stealership for them to have to order parts or not be able replicate the issue, I decided to try to upgrade the uconnect software to the latest release. EPIC FAIL.

The update went swimmingly until it got to module 10 of 12, which is for the wireless modem. The update hits 1% then times out. All other modules that were successfully updated are worthless. In fact, the whole unit is now worthless. The display continues to display "insert update USB" over a lovely light blue background.

I brought the USB in to verify everything and the update created a log file that I opened up only to verify my suspicions. Since the telematics/in-vehicle phone went bad, it went so bad that the system doesn't even see it during the update process. This means that even a rollback is pointless. Only if I could eliminate the wireless card/modem module of the update could it work. Or, if the dealership can replace the faulty module, it SHOULD work. Until then, it looks like I will be rocking my headphones to/from work as opposed to using my $50k jukebox on wheels. So much for premium sound!?!?

Oh yeah, called the uconnect "hotline." They informed me that only the dealership will be able to help me at this point.

Good luck to the others out there with similar issues!

Re: Getting "Vehicle phone requires service message"

They can't just change the wireless card, the whole radio must be replaced.

Forgive me if that was sarcasm, I'm new here.

But, I assuming you have Uconnect capability, just download the Uconnect access app and follow the steps for registration. There's a free trial period, then it's ~$15/month I think. Remote access lets you do anything your key fob would do just from any device with an internet connection and then some. It's not instantaneous, but it works, as long as your radio does.

Re: Getting "Vehicle phone requires service message"

Great news SRTWIL. It was actually a selling feature of the Jeep for me. My BMW, while it had telematics for remote door unlock, did not allow me to remotely start the vehicle. From what I read, aftermarket remote starts would have thrown errors due to the CAN BUS they use. But, that's a discussion for a different board...The Uconnect features are awesome!!!!

So, quick update on my service appointment today. Lets just say I highly recommend letting the fellas with the right tools deal with any electronics issues. 17 updates later and 4 or so hours of my life that I won't get back, I am back in action. They didn't replace the radio or any associated components because the updates seem to have worked.

I'm cautiously optimistic that the fix will stick, but will keep checking in...

On June 4, 2014, my Jeep was repaired and back in service, despite the dealer's earlier alert that the parts were unavailable until July 24, 2014. I have now driven the Jeep several hundred miles in the last week and to my relief all is well. No idiot lights have turned on. So far, so good.
