Really? So you're calling out those who've mis-shifted as stupid, but it's ok because you prefaced it with "no offense"...

You are correct that at the end of the day it is user (my) error. And as a responsible driver I got rid of my Overland and will be replacing it with a new Summit if the new shifter works as expected. It wasn't the only reason for the change, but the shifter was high on the list.

Exactly this.

I agree this is probably going to be user error, but it is user error based on a poor design. Yes you can look down at the shifter or up at the dash and now I have to do that. That does not mean that this design isn't stupid. If you have driven an automatic for more than a year you stop looking down at the shifter. You know by feel what gear you are in. Now I am forced to look down so frequently I feel like I'm back in drivers-ed.

BINGO!!

As much as I dislike government intervention into my life, especially with my cars, the sequence of "PRNDL" was mandated in the mid-1960s for a reason. The reason being a consistent, logical gear sequence, for automatic transmission equipped cars, allowed people to move from one car to another, without needing a new training session each time.

Yes, my GC follows that gear sequence, but the shifter's operation isn't consistent. I squeeze the "trigger" to move the handle, but sometimes I get "Drive", sometimes it stops in "Neutral". When stopping the vehicle, sometimes the shifter will go all the way to "Park", while sometimes it stops in "Reverse".

I've had the Jeep since mid-March of 2015, been driving (legally) since June of 1968. When does the operation of this shifter become "natural" to me?

Chrysler messed it up back in the 60s

All is takes is a quick second to look at the dash or shifter to see what gear the car is in that's all. Owner of a '15 and I ALWAYS look to see what gear the car is in when I'm shifting.
I'm reminded of the stories about people getting hit in parking garages with drivers claiming that their parking sensors didn't go off so they thought it was safe to back up without even looking.

i wonder what would happen to this small percentage of jgk owners that cant seem to figure out how the electronic shifter works if they were put into a vehicle with a manual transmission? talk about carnage.

Manual transmissions are more logical. Each position is a different gear and you don't use the same movement to the same position to do two different things ... d to s and back to d

It isn't about figuring it out. I can figure out how to do a lot of things that I don't want to do, because they don't make sense.

Re: Grand Cherokee under investigation

Making everything idiot proof just encourages the idiots to continue their stupid behavior. It used to be that natural selection would cull the idiots from the herd, but not so much anymore.

Let's not blame Chrysler for the design. It was in use before they put in in their vehicles as evident on the 2011 Audi A8. Most likely they were trying
to imitate a luxury car brand.

Really???

I learned how to drive a car with a manual transmission in 1962, when I was 10 years old. And today, there's a Corvette, with a manual 6 speed, in my garage, that I have ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM WITH. The Jeep is sitting next to it. That doesn't change the fact that the Jeep's automatic shifter design is awkward.....
