Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

Got mine back. Seems like they did a decent job. Nothing usually this easy for me. I compared pictures to others on here and everything looks like it was done right. Anyone see anything I missed?ImageUploadedByJeepGarage1398827845.169863.jpgImageUploadedByJeepGarage1398827870.920068.jpgImageUploadedByJeepGarage1398827897.872115.jpgImageUploadedByJeepGarage1398827912.206784.jpg

I think your dealer made a huge mistake. My dealer told me they would not release my Jeep to me, period. I didn't even buy it from them! They said it is unsafe to drive as the grease can get into the brakes (obviously not allowing a consistent stop among all the tires, etc.) and the CV joint could lock up, etc. causing even more damage. Again, they would not allow me to drive off the lot even when I told them I would only be driving locally under 50 MPH until the parts came in...nope.

I would take heed and either not drive it except back to the dealership (if you have another vehicle to drive) or take it back and Jeep will provide a rental (a $35 or under a day rental, but a rental nonetheless). The safety isn't worth it and the potential further damage to your Jeep isn't either.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

Just had my dealer look at the jeep. They were a little skeptical of me until they lifted it and saw the mess. I am the first one they have seen with this problem, so they were a bit perplexed. Chrysler apparently told them to replace both front axles so they are waiting on parts for that. I asked them to clean up all the grease too, so we'll see how it turns out.

Until then, I'm in a shiny red VW Jetta! Any chance to leverage Chrysler for some discounts or free accessories because of this mess?

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

Everyone who has this issue post up your BUILD DATE!
Also, the dealers are replacing the axles...

So is it bad axles, or faulty clamps?
Would the issue be alleviated by tightening & making sure the band clamps are secure or will this happen even if the band clamps are tight??

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

^^^^^^

As a backyard mechanic (who DID sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night ) it's the clamp. If you look closely at the clamp it is a solid ring design that requires a special crimp tool most likely only existing at the manufacturing "station". I'll compare the style of clamp to a nice watch band whereby it is a larger unclamped diameter for assembly and them it "folds" over in two spots while being crimped down and then is secured by notches on the ring as the hold down mechanism. There appears to be no way to tighten the clamp in the field without whatever tool was used to install in the first place. If you get a good look at one you will see what I mean.

The reason why the axle/shalf-shaft is being replaced is most likely (remember, Holiday Inn Express ) two reasons. First, is economic reality. It is easier and cheaper to replace the whole assembly than it is to pay a dealer to rebuild one. The second is liability. No way is a manufacturer in today's legal climate going to rebuild a CV joint that has been opened up. Imagine the lawsuit when they do and the non-factory mechanic at the dealer makes a mistake and the joint fails at highway speed in a year.

If I'm wrong blame Holiday Inn Express.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

How long has it taken for the dealer to get the parts in everyone's experience? I'm in a crappy 3 year old Chevy Impala from Hertz that smells like cigarettes. All while paying the lease on my new Grand Cherokee. I would like for this time to be as short as possible! So far no info from dealer.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

So inspecting the clamp at the dealer does nothing since it can't be field tightened is what you're saying...

So its basically a "wait & see" till it comes loose & fails?

Possibly a field (dealer) replacement clamp can be used to replace the existing ones which are failing?

Or is this going to be a case by case job, until an eventual TSB or recall?

Look under car behind rim (or have dealer inspect)...bunch a grease, need new assembly, no grease, you escaped problem.

No, all evidence points to a day one problem. These clamps don't appear to be working loose. They are not tight from the factory and will throw grease within hours/days. Just needs some higher rpms to fling it out the one end of the boot that is not secured (outer boot, outboard clamp).

No way for reasons listed above. Not gonna happen and you don't want it to.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

So just "feel" the clamp & CV boot, if its loose you're gonna get the grease & need axle replacement, if they're snug, you should be OK??

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

^^^^^^

So u r picking up today still?

Insist the dealer put it on a lift and show you they are tight. Any grief, make him go to this forum page.

If you have already picked up, yes it will be obvious as the clamp will be basically free sliding and most likely off the rubber. Don't go cranking on the boot trying to pull it off to ensure it is very tight, just use your judgement.

Best to have dealer confirm for you.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

Just an FYI, I noticed some grease on the outside of my front two rims within 24 hours and 50 miles of getting my GC (I just didn't know the extent of the problem at the time).

I wonder it the clamp wasn't tight enough or if grease got under the area of the boot that the clamp goes over before it was tightened resulting in movement?
