Both good points. Grease between rubber boot and smooth shaft surface combined with high centrifugal force and lateral tension on boot ends from left/right turning could definitely cause the boot to slip off that large round axle surface thus causing clamp to fall be loose once boot slips off. Dying to see someones before replacement but cleaned up to see if ring looks intact in clamped down position (implying the previous guess is correct) or if it appears to never have been clamped or maybe the clamp "unsprung"....Doesn't really matter hear nor there, just curious.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

My Jeep is back in action. Took it to the dealer around 830am this morning. They sent someone to get the parts 1.5hrs away, and got the job done and now I have it back. Pretty impressed with their responsiveness -- I was prepared to drive the rental for a few days. The pics look so much better. Check out my initial post to see what a mess this was.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

Been watching this thread....and my Jeep for a while. My MFG date is 4/14/2014 (although I got word of the build around 4/8/2014) and at this time I am free from the CV Boot / grease issues. I have 600 miles on the Jeep at this time (highway, back roads, city) so I am hoping I won't have the issue. I will post some pictures momentarily; however one CV Boot clamp appears to be seated to the edge of the rubber (guess it isn't a problem).

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

I don't think this is a problem that "happens". Your Jeep either had the clamp installed correctly or it didn't when it left the assembly line. From what I've seen the clamp was either not tightened or missing completely (can't tell because of all the grease!) right from the get go. It's not something that happens over time.

If you have no grease on your wheels by now, you're golden.

The clamps are there....they spin off and are so covered with grease you don't see the silver anymore, but they are there if you enlarge the photos you can see them.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

Provided below are a couple of pictures of my Jeep, 4/14/2014 MFG Date (Build notification around 4/8/2014), for reference if needed by others on the forum. Please note that one of the clamps on the front left has a QA mark that isn't lined up. I have 600 miles on the Jeep at this point with no issues with a mix of all types of driving. I am hopeful that as another member suggested that this is there from the start and not something that can show up over time.

Thanks for the good info guys and I hope this is useful for someone.

^^^^^^^

hmmm, if it were me I would go buy a colored sharpie and make new "movement" marks and watch it. There should be ZERO.ZERO movement.

I might do that....been keeping an eye on it since I got it (about 2 weeks now) and I haven't noticed anything. Noticed the mark being "off" since I first looked at it about a week back. The sharpie thing is a good idea!

or reach your hand under there and give it a light pull, it should not move at all let alone come off. Better to find it out now and have it addressed than be halfway across the country on a vacation or something.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

Find some fingernail polish and that would mark it well too.
