Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

Hello and welcome to the grease buster club 😣. Not sure where you're getting the 3/14 build date but I believe your MDH indicates your Jeep was built February 28 in the 21st hour of the day.

If you have that many miles I'd think you'll be ok but for sure keep an eye on it. I plan to look under mine at the end of each trip or at the end of each day. So far so good for me too but can't be to careful.

Regarding the witness marks you have to look around the full circumference of the assembly. Both of mine have marks that stop short of the steel hub but when I kept looking I found others that went the full way.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

Month Day Hour is correct per 14JGCAltitudeWK2. The 03/14 refers to the month and year which is March 2014. Your must have been built late on 2/28 and finished with the sticker printed on early 3/1 hence the difference is what I suspect.

14JGCAltitudeWK2 - the pen alignment marks look to be made when the boot is in the most collapsed position and the person making the marks didn't press down to hard and just skipped a bit. Yours looks good. I'm going to look for grease anytime I wash my Jeep and of course expect the dealership to inspect everything when doing oil changes too.

Yes, the MDH is assigned in the computer when the body is dropped onto "frame". The Date of Manufacture is when it leaves the line, normally same day or next day. However, 2/28 is a Friday and your "H" is 9pm so it left the line in March, hence, your Date of Manufacture is 3/14.

Ya, alignment marks are probably a less exact guide (maybe) but certainly something to watch for movement. ANY grease, anywhere, any amount = problem.

Ya, know what you mean but two things. If so, that's an awfully far stretch for the boot (another 1/2" outboard) and the boot seems to look normal in the relaxed position (wheels straight) and doesn't look over stretched in the articulated position (wheels full stop turned). Also, that one bolt head to the right in both the pics seems to be awfully close the last 1/2" of shaft on the other side of the suspected groove. I'm gonna say the shaft was "lathed" to provide sufficient clearance with that bolt head.

There has gotta be groove or lip under that boot edge that we won't see unless someone cleans up a failed unit and posts pics BEFORE they take it in. I would like to see that area failed/cleaned to better understand what is going on.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

^^^^^^^

Glad dealer acknowledged your right side was in early stage of failure due to the grease just starting to show under outer boot lip.

Not to unduly alarm folks but TypeRod's example should serve as a big caution to anyone with a March-April build date who see's no major mess on either side or on one side and the other looks "good".

Closely monitor the front outermost CV boot/clamp for ANY signs of grease whatsoever. Grease = take it in.

Thanks for the response, as for the dates ,,Here are a couple pictures of the sticker on my door. Its says both Date of MFR (Built) 03/14 and then MDH 022821, so I wonder which build date I go by,, march of 14 or Feb of 14?

See my post above.

As for which one? Good question. Bet most are posting the Date of Mfr and best most aren't like yours at month end.

You should still watch yours as nobody knows for sure when the bad batch of axle assemblies hit the factory floor or when they corrected the problem.

^^^

The month is 3/2014 but for an exact date you go by the actual day which is 2/28/2014 as that is the only information given. The 2/28/2014 must be when it is officially considered a "vehicle" as 14SummitHemi wrote when the body is dropped into the frame.

Yellows are close on passenger side but not on drivers side and what are the purple marks for?

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

I have marks all over mine....yellow, white, purple. Probably no way to know for sure what purpose each serves... Best thing is to have a flashlight handy and get in the habit of checking them frequently.
