Most likely each station/person and/or assembly step has their own color pen.

Glad dealer acknowledged your right side was in early stage of failure due to the grease just starting to show under outer boot lip.

Not to unduly alarm folks but TypeRod's example should serve as a big caution to anyone with a March-April build date who see's no major mess on either side or on one side and the other looks "good".

Closely monitor the front outermost CV boot/clamp for ANY signs of grease whatsoever. Grease = take it in.
Thanks! Yes, I too am glad they acknowledged it as well!

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

Add my new 2014 Overland to the mix.

Just went to the dealer today and they're replacing the driver's side axle. Thinking I'll need to push for both axles.

I know Jeeps aren't that reliable, but seriously? My first Jeep...and the way things have started, probably my last. Gift for my wife, had it for 1 week and now she's already without a vehicle.

Now I know why people warn you about Jeeps. Who cares if they're nice if you can't depend on them.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

Trevor sorry your Jeep has the bug. When you get a chance let us know what your build date is by looking on the drivers side door sticker (MDH = month day hour it was built). Insist they replace both sides even if only one has failed. The other one is sure to go at some point. Also, make sure they do a good job cleaning up afterwards. Good luck and keep us posted.

Sorry to hear you're a member of the grease club too.

I know it is frustrating. But have no fear, Jeeps are reliable. This is my seventh new Jeep. My 2005 GC had ZERO issues in six years. My 2011 GC had ZERO issues in three years except upon delivery one front seat cushion bottom had leather that was excess/loose and the leather cover was replaced at my request (some people may not have even noticed it). My other five Jeeps were all great except the first model year GC in fall of 1992 did have a few warranty issues but that was 20+ years ago and quality has improved a lot since then.

My sister's huge $$$ Lexus SUV has been in the shop a few times. Same with my brother's Yukon.

The axle replacement is a bummer and quite frankly a surprising parts quality error, but once it is done you'll forget about it soon enough. Hang in their and ... hopefully soon ... you'll be enjoying your GC!!!

Best wishes...and can you post your build date please.

Will do. I don't have the paperwork in front of me, but I swear my build date is 3/14 too.

All the paperwork is still in the Jeep...show how far it got before breaking.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

So my dealer is still waiting for the "part" -- it's been a week now. I'm still driving my GC around (not too far). I didn't want to deal with a crappy rental car for over a week, and the dealer said it was OK to drive.

Must have been a run on the axle parts bin in Detroit....

I just hope the parts bin for replacements is a different parts bin than for assembly. Just sayin'

DynamicLA hope the parts come in soon. Have you listed your MDH from the driver's door yet? I am going to put everyone's build date and info into a simple table and wouldn't want to miss yours.

Funny story about an Outback I had years ago. The O2 sensor kept going out and they could not understand why. After about the fifth time in the shop someone thought to check lot numbers and they were all pulled from the same lot. Different lot and problem was fixed.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

I'm curious.

I'm taking delivery of a GC LTD tomorrow and sent the dealer a link to this thread today.

Will they be able to tell if it is likely to have this issue by looking at it on the lift? It seems like a "we'll know when it happens" type issue. My guy was more than willing to take a look, I just hope you can spot the issue by looking.

My build date is 4/1/14, BTW.
