Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

I will be sure to keep you posted...I am going to clean up some of the grease and see if it returns. I really do not want to have to wait for weeks to get it fixed, again. The other replacement still looks clean. It was a situation where one axle came from one location and the other was back ordered and sent from another location. So who knows

Looking underneath, I'm not sure what has come loose? Could it just be grease that was left over and not cleaned up? I did a quick inspection when I picked it up, but had my 3 year old and she wasn't in the mood to be waiting. I do know there is the metal on metal sound, not sure what that would be from? I will take it back on Tuesday and get it checked out, I really hope it is just leftovers and nothing wrong...my location is in northern Delaware.

GOOD NEWS FOLKS! No way that grease is from a new failure. Not possible to have that amount of grease and have virtually zero on the 1" or so of exposed large diam shaft just past the boot end/clamp edge.

TypeRod and others, it's ok to step back from the ledge!

At this point, this is a false alarm.

EcoAquariums, your dealer needs a poke in the eyeball for not cleaning up your vehicle totally.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

^^^ I concur. No sign of the new CV boot clamp failing in these two post-repair photos. I do see a lot of grease from the first failure and the dealership was lazy on cleaning up the grease.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

I feel a lot better, Thanks guys! BUT, my OCD won't be satisified until I get my JGC back in my hands for test driving and inspection! LOL!

EcoAquariums, thanks for getting the pics up so fast! Is the noise you are hearing coming from both sides? Can you reproduce the noise consistently?

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

Hey TypeRod have you considered telling the dealership you want your Jeep on a hoist when you arrive to pick it up? What better way to do a thorough inspection of not just the new parts but also their clean up work. Crawling around on the ground is for the birds especially after what you've been through. Take a flashlight, camera to document everything, push and pull on the new boots to make sure they're tight, look at the witness marks, etc. I have a little OCD myself and I know for me this would be the only way I could leave the lot felling good about things.

I have 600 miles on the Jeep at this time (highway, back roads, city) so I am hoping I won't have the issue. I will post some pictures momentarily; however one CV Boot clamp appears to be seated to the edge of the rubber (guess it isn't a problem).
OutsiderWV, I was reviewing pics in this thread for another reason and yours just hit me like a 2x4....I'll bet $20 this clamp is physically loose. There should be a 1/32 ish edge lip of the boot visible on the right edge of the clamp in this pic plus the clamp is casting a small shadow on the left side. Plus the obvious mis-alignment of witness marks.

It just has to be loose to the touch and I would be shocked if you don't have any grease coming out.

Hope I'm wrong.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

EcoAquariums, while the grease mess is not apparently a new failure you still have the on/off metal on metal sound from driver's side. I know you are taking it in Tues but curious still....

...is sound noticeable only when you turn right (i.e. load left/driver side)?
...is sound constant or does it change pitch with speed?
...is it more of a grinding sound or a spinning/whizzing type sound?
...do you feel un-even clunking when turning right or backing out and cutting steering wheel?
...how much do you "feel" it through the steering wheel?

I have.....but I feel like I've bombarded the SA with all my OCD concerns and this one may push him over the edge. lol. I honestly do want to ask, but just don't want to be "that customer", even though I AM THAT CUSTOMER, lol! Should I ask? I think I will ask when I get the call from the SA, but I'll be cringing while I ask over the phone.

I totally concur on this....the clamp is over the tiny lip edge of the boot.

I would like to know as well, in case I have similar issues when I get my JGC back today. Thanks!

LOL! Update, I just called the SA and asked if I could inspect the car while on the lift, and he basically if I can be there right away when he finishes so I don't hold up the tech, which I totally understand. So then I told him I totally understand that, and then I asked well if the tech can give you a heads up about when he is about to finish the work, you can call me at that time, and I'll leave work ASAP, since I'm only 15 mins away. He said politely "we'll see what we could do for you" and I left it at that. Hopefully it will happen. All I want is that the grease be cleaned up well from the rim and the suspension, and have no other issues be introduced while this work is being done, and I'll be happy!

Good luck with the re-delivery of your Jeep! If you don't get to see it on the hoist I'm sure you'll look it over as best you can before driving off. It's good for you that you work so close....maybe not so good for them! Haha. Let us know....

Thank you sir! And yes you can be sure I will be looking it over with an extremely fine tooth comb, either if I see it on the lift or not! lol! Yeah, I'm sure this SA is sick of me by now, lol.
