Both wheels were clean when I left the dealership. Sooo, I guess it is back to the dealership for me...I bought this car last month so I could have it for my trip to the OBX the end of this month, I am not going to be very happy being told I won't have it back for my trip!
Are the boots simply not fastened down particularly well?
Or is the rubber/plastic in them failing?
Or they simply don't stretch enough to handle suspension movement?

Now you guys got me feeling the back of the wheels weekly.
Thankfully, at least I can do it behind a closed garage door to keep the neighbors from making comments about jeep love.

I ask if it's safe to drive and they say yes, so I pick up my car.

1 week goes by. No phone call. Another 6 days go by. No phone call. So today I call the dealer up and say "what's the status of my part". They have no clue and will call me back.

So far, I'm not impressed with communication from Chrysler or my dealer.

I AM impressed with my GC though, because aside from this axle issue it's an amazing vehicle.

Am I expecting too much to be updated by the Jeep dealer? I previously owned an Audi, and the Audi dealer was amazing in terms of calling me proactively and keeping me updated on service issues when I brought my car in. The Jeep dealer makes it seem like I am bothering them because I have to call them for a part status!

I'll update everyone later when (if) they call me later today. Either the part is back-ordered for over 2 weeks, or it is sitting at the dealer and they just haven't bothered to call me. We'll see.
I'm surprised your dealer said it was safe to drive. Mine wouldn't release the Jeep back to me and said I would have to leave it with them until the part comes in.

I have to agree with you on the service. I owned a BMW prior to the Jeep and the service was light years better in terms of communication.

I also think Chrysler needs to get their act together and put out an official communication to affected owners. I know a few here have mentioned that is in the works so hopefully Chrysler will make it right soon.

Sorry to hear about your troubles with your dealer! I don't think you are expecting much at all. A customer shouldn't be left in the dark about their parts especially for a warranty issue, but thats just me. Seems to be hit or miss here with members if the dealer lets you drive your car home with all that grease near the brakes. IMHO, its a safety issue. Hopefully the clouds clear for you soon, and you get taken care of properly, good luck!

I have contacted my dealer and they ordered the parts for replacement of both half axel shafts. My dealer also stated it would be fine to drive until the parts came in outside of them dealing with the mess during the repair. FYI....still no grease coming out even though the clamp is just about completely off of the boot.

Hmmmm.....wonder why they didn't just install another clamp to keep the grease from coming out until the new axles come in?

Yes hopefully soon, it is in the works. From a former Mercedes owner / daily driver I can say that Mercedes is no better in communicating this stuff any faster. People affected by a manufacturing problems wait months when there is an issue with a part.... Speaking from experience. Besides my wheel falling off which of course was the service department not Mercedes (the following day of course).

I have been around to enough vehicles to know that in Jeep land we just communicate better... Which includes the bad stuff.

Dan_JGC..."Hmmmm.....wonder why they didn't just install another clamp to keep the grease from coming out until the new axles come in?"

I hear you BUT that would be an "alteration". Imagine the legal poo the dealer would be in if it failed in motion!

Plus, only clamp they could use would be a worm drive type which, I would imagine, would cause issues due to the very high rotational speed of the axle and the fact that a worm clamp is not evenly weighted with the worm screw.

Dunno. The dealership is already at risk allowing the vehicle to be driven off the lot after documenting the problem. Adding a clamp as a stop gap measure would seem to be at least lessening the risk. But if such a clamp isn't feasible, oh well.

Ya, I know but these joints are good for an easy 1-3k or so miles before outright failure and they will proudly announce the impending doom for a few hundred miles. It would take a real knucklehead to drive one and ignore it all the way to failure.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

They haven't seen it yet could be why they didn't clamp it (but I would rather them not "potentially" mess something up doing that). My dealer is about 60 miles out so I sent pictures, called them, and sent them this forum thread. I was trying to get it ordered just in case there was a long back order and I could keep it in my garage. I also sent him a pic of what it will look like when it fails. The guy was very nice and ordered the 2 parts after looking at the pictures and said he would let me know tomorrow the estimated delivery. That is when he told me that I could drive it in with no worries as the biggest issue would be the mess they had to clean up if it came off. He didn't say I could drive it forever like that, just to the dealer to get it fixed. Check out the latest pic...I don't know if it will hold on enough to get there or not...It is tight though...no movement when I try to turn it. Been like this for about 4 days (Fri - Mon) and I drove it this weekend about 40 miles. Can't wait to get this fixed so I don't have to worry about it any longer.
