Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

It took over a year for the recall of 2010-2012 Dodge Challengers 5.7L for the timing chain failure..

Go on challengertalk & do a search...
Literally 100's of people with failed engines before the recall was issued.....

People constantly complained, dealers were inundated with this severe issue for a long long time before something was done..

The CV boot clamp issue is a drop in the bucket cost wise compared to a major top end engine overhaul. I don't forsee anything happening corporate wise.

It fails, you bring it in, they'll fix under warranty.
Thats about the extent of it.. (unfortunately)

Meanwhile, GM just recalled 2.7 MILLON vehicles for a module that either illuminates brake lights without the brake being applied, or does NOT light when the brakes are applied.. again thats 2.7 million vehicles..

Failed CV boot issue, maybe 96,000 cars? > 1600/day for 60 days, prob a lot less....
So a recall not likely to occur, just a TSB, fix it when it comes in..

Actually less than half that....I have previously gone on someone else saying 1600/day so for grins I looked it up on the Chrysler website:

"...Jeep vehicle sales were led globally and in the U.S. by Grand Cherokee (255,005 global; 174,275 U.S.)..."

Pick your # of production days but let's just say the problem covers 1.5 months (all March - April14) so that's 12.5% or 31,875 total possible.

Since Durango's are affected too and they sold 49k to the JGC total of 165k in 2012 (latest on Durango I could find) let's just assume same ratio of 30% or 76,500 sold and 12.5% of that is 9,562.

So maybe 40k is total population that could be affected.

Can you tell I'm a numbers guy?

Point taken Yo-El....small potatoes in reality but still BIG yams to the 40K or so.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

Plus we can add to the mix that not all parts are necessarily from the same supplier/vendor..

Jeep can use multiple sources for the same exact part, so we need to know possibly the specific vendor & lot # for the failing CV boots clamps...

I'm sure somewhere someone is on this> (hopefully)

My thought is in a manufacturing atmosphere, when a component fails multiple times, a red flag is raised, and a case worker assigned to assess the magnitude of the failure to see if its a specific vendor or lot #, or to see if its going to be a catastrophic event...

It may be even less than that, there is no way of knowing that I am aware of how many axle assemblies might be bad; might be one run, might be more. Are the same axle assemblies used on all the 4WD systems?

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

^^^^^^

No, QT I has single speed front transfer case (diff part). QTC II and above JGC have two-speed case which is the part that is failing (left and right part #).

Durango has different trim/option combos but it's same part #'s for two-speed transfer case.

So the base Laredo should not see this problem? This will make my son happy, he went with the Laredo a month ago, but I get to worry

Stupid question if the dealer is one of those that is always willing to return old parts.
Is there actually a groove in the things that the retainer band is supposed to fit into?

It would seem "stupid at best" if not.

46er ^^^^^

Don't know if Chrysler is reporting issues with the QT I/single speed case axle assy CV boots in the base Laredo but not seeing it on the forums. Here's hoping he's in the clear.

Yes, you can see the 1/64th ish outer edge of the boot on the outboard edge of the band/clamp. Don't know if there is a valley/groove that is recessed in boot as I have not seen a clean failed one. Given thinness of boot I am gonna say no on that.

I think the 1,600 was per production day (not per calendar day)......365 - days not in production = production days. Your numbers though work out the same as you used percentages assuming production is constant from month to month. Anyway, it give a guestimate.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

Just heard from the dealership about my Jeep. As others here have mentioned, the driver's side half axle part they need to repair my Jeep is currently on back order. The SA told me there is currently only 5 in dealer inventory in the whole country and they tried to get one from one of the dealerships that is relatively close by but that dealership wouldn't release the part. Not sure if I believe that whole story or not, but it doesn't look like I'll be getting my Jeep back anytime soon. This whole experience has been very frustrating and disappointing.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

Hey nrb what if you drove to the dealership that has the part, try to buy it from the parts dept., take it back to the dealership that has your Jeep, and have them install it. Not sure you could talk them out of it but it might be worth a try.
