Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

OMGosh....at least that is good for a laugh redddog. From our forum sampling, it sure seems like there is a large batch with this problem.

From what we know, unless the clamp has started to move there seems to be no way to know whether a clamp is bad or not. So even upon inspection you just don't know until it starts to slip. From what I understand, the normal way CV boots fail is by being torn etc. and NOT by a clamp slipping off. Very odd.

I am very curious as to what is the exact problem.

Is the clamp just slightly too big? Was the clamping machine not calibrated correctly (assuming it gets set to a specific force instead of the clamp itself determining the final diameter size)? Is the metal in the clamp somehow stretching/expanding while in use? Is there supposed to be a groove in the CV joint where the clamp goes over the boot thereby clamping it inset? Did grease get under the boot in the clamp area or under the clamp itself? Is the axle on the wheel side somehow smaller in diameter than it is supposed to be and the clamp is set to a specific length? Is the rubber in the CV boot thinner than it is supposed to be?

In a nutshell, it is either something wrong with the clamp, the rubber boot, the axle, or grease in the wrong spot...or a combo of some kind.

Please post your build date --- on the inside edge of your driver's door there is a sticker, the date is under "MDH" (Month Day Hour) to find out your month and day. Don't confuse it with "DATE OF MFR(BUILT)" which is just the month and year which would mean everyone's is built on the 14th! LOL

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

Updated with build date. The best part is with the holiday I'd be surprised if they even put the order in by Wednesday. Guess I'll mosey over and see if my Outback is still around for a loaner.

Wow, sorry to hear. We got almost a month before ours went. No clue when we're going to get the JGC back - it's been a week so far.

Good luck!

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

Dan,

All good questions.

My only question is how the hell this hasn't been dealt with proactively.

My brother-in-law is a much better example of the average owner - someone who doesn't visit car forums like us.

He would have never known to look at his wheels and would have certainly driven it until failure.

I guess my other question is what does a mechanical failure of that joint look like, is that a dangerous situation and how long without grease would it take to mechanically fail? Cause its gonna happen.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

^^^^^^^

I would presume that it would be caught during an oil change when someone is under the vehicle. But who knows.

As has been posted earlier, without sufficient grease (and perhaps with contaminants) the CV joint would start to make clicking noises well before failure. You can probably drive it for a long time but the main concern is all that grease could get into the brakes.

I totally agree that Jeep needs to identify the batch and send a letter to all owners that may be affected to come in to the dealer for inspection and a free oil change as an incentive (they are new vehicles).

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

I think the owners usign the 20" wheels will notice it first as the 18" wheel cover the inside of the rim. Had I not been compuslive about cleaning my new vehicle, I would have not noticed it. I think we are all on the front line of this big problem.

These cars are really expensive and the brand new owners are literally getting the shaft!

Everyone needs to file a complaint with the NHSTA. Please do so!

Are there any jeep dealers in the area we can trust to service our vehicles?! I'm in the car business myself so I'm gonna guess no. I work right near darcars so that wouldve been most convenient. I guess I'll give ourisman in clarksville a try as they're closest to my home smh

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

As was pointed out elsewhere, check out the number of NHTSA filed complaints regarding our 2014 JGC vs. 2014 Honda Pilots or Toyota 4Runner. I know folks will say Jeeps are more "capable" but the real question is it worth the hassle of dealing with being FCA's Quality Control guinea pigs?

Moreover, how capable are our Jeeps when they spend weeks at a time at the dealer for CV boot failures, DEF injector design flaws, transmission issues, electronic gremlins, etc?

Given that it has been week and the dealer refuses to give me an update on the status of the CV boot parts, I am truly starting to regret my purchase, particularly given the wholly nonchalant attitude of my dealer and FCA corporate in addressing this problem.

In this day and age when consumers have so many quality vehicles to choose from, one would think that FCA would have been at the forefront educating its customers and dealers about this issue and would have stopped shipping vehicles with KNOWN defective parts.
