Cheers Dan

I wish I had your outlook. I would be far less anxious if I had an undertaking from the dealership that I would not be without wheels should I be affected.

The sales people were very quiet on the phone and would give no assurances until further investigation.

So I want some answers before accepting the vehicle.

Both sales personnel kept intimating that Australian right hand drive vehicles might not be affected.

Show of hands.

How many of you know a Salesman who would say, as you we're signing your deal "hold on. Before you sign that, I just wanted to let you know that me and some of the other sales people have heard that the front axle is going to crap-out in a couple of weeks and you'll be driving a minivan until we get our heads out of our arses. Should only be a couple of weeks though."

Anyone? Anyone?

I've been a satisfied Jeep owner (SEVEN Jeeps 6 GC's and ONE Wrangler) since the fall of 1992 and based on my 1,100 miles in my 14, I'm sure I'll be getting a Jeep again the next time I am in the market for a new vehicle.
Dan, in this day and age, with the amount of information consumers have access to, three months is unacceptably long for a manufacturer to respond to an identifiable, known problem. It is also unacceptable, IMHO, for Jeep to tell customers that they aren't aware of any issues (as my dealer told me and Jeep customer service told me) when in fact they are.

I understand that folks want to be supportive of the brand, but the way this issue has been handled is pathetic and there is no excuse or explanation for it.

And it could very well become dangerous to someone who would never know to look for the problem and could be totally oblivious to signs of mechanical failure.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

DSYLEXC - Thanks for the photos....the fold flat seat is definitely useful. Wish they had that in all the vehicles. I take it the seat is otherwise the same. Hmmmm.....me limey.

major2000 - Yep. Wish they would be more proactive. Again, though, an inspection as far as we know won't detect the problem so that makes it hard to address too.

redddog - I agree. Definitely a potential safety issue. As I had posted, I wish Jeep would contact all potential owners and offer a free oil change for coming in to inspect. Although the inspection might not reveal it before it goes.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

Or at least tell them to be on the lookout in case it does fail.

As it is, they'll deny that there's even a potential issue. It's disgusting. These guys all know of a potential safety issue and they are essentially covering it up.

I know I've been a loud mouth on this issue and probably am pissing off people here but I really can't believe that this could happen like this.

I'll step off the soapbox at some point soon but I'm really just amazed.

Why so surprised? Just look at the reactions by Toyota, Ford, Audi and more for issues that caused deaths. A failing boot on a half- shaft is unfortunate, but in reality, just a bump in the road for any manufacturer. And anyone with this problem has the right to be ticked off if they want to be, but the real villain is the maker of the half-shaft for poor QC. Still have not read or heard who that might be. Until the number of problems is known, I really can't be that hard on Jeep yet. I am sure they did QC on the original design, but they can't test every part before it is used. I haven't seen anything that indicates there is a batch number, build date, whatever means of identifying when the axle was made. I'll have to crawl under mine to see if there is.

Edit: Took a look and there is a sticker on the half-shaft, looks like it has a bar code on it, but I can't see it well enough from ground level as another part is blocking it. A lift would be nice.

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

The Internet puts us ahead of the curve of the manufacturer a bit.

I had read somewhere that since the GM bailout, GM has recalled more vehicles than it has built. And that is a full recall not for minor stuff.

Now that's what I call a real control problem Maybe they are helping Toyota with their 6 million recalls

Re: Grease In Both Front Wheels... Normal?

Just got word on mine...they replaced the driver's side (obvious failure) and identified the passenger side needs to be done, but they have to order it. "Could be a couple days to a week" was the timeline I was given...in a Nissan Versa!! Give me back my Outback!

The first really proactive replacement perhaps....progress.
