Update on this: the driver's side boot (left photo above that we all thought "looked better" haha) failed at 400 miles. I talked to the service manager at the dealership, he did some research (said there were no TSBs or anything else in the system but his Chrysler technical service rep said they had seen "a few" 2014s affected) and went ahead and ordered both axles for replacement, even though passenger side hasn't failed "yet".
He said parts are on "national backorder" and would have his parts department let me know in a few days what the ETA is.
Assuming the repair is done correctly, I can't complain about this level of service. I get to keep my truck while waiting for parts (we don't drive that much so I'm not that worried about it).
I also credit this forum for my being able to be credible and persuasive with the SM, although maybe it's just me
Hopefully Final Update: Waited just two days for parts and overnight for replacement of both half shafts. Only driver's side had failed, but dealer preemptively replaced the passenger side.
Dealership paid for Enterprise rental car (an Avenger).
Service Manager said he used 15 cans of brake cleaner to get all the grease off.
Anyway, seems to drive straight and I'm feeling good again. Hopefully that's the last "bump" I hit with this vehicle.
Dealer was Hawk CDJ in Forest Park, IL and I give them a thumbs up for the way I've been treated so far.
